It's more than obvious that "Quick Opinions" are becoming a trend.
Kinda like fast food and convenience stores.

It's quick and it's cheap and we can get quick service in a quick time

The problem with "Quick" is that it excludes "Quality" sometimes.

But people are accepting a "quick opinion" as the final rock solid verdict these days.
This is simply a big error for buyers and sellers using this service.

A quick opinion is a "guide" to help steer the person in the right direction.
It simply means that it could be real or could not be real.
More than likely it's good or more than likely it's bad.
It is NOT a rock solid verdict and should in NO WAY be associated as the same as an in hand personal examination by the authenticator and a signed certificate.
These are 2 different animals and should be treated in the manner they are intended.

A quick opinion is cheap and it's easy....
Maybe it should be called "Cheap Opinion" LOL

Thanks Tim

And I will add...

This wasn't meant to rattle any cages... or point fingers.... or disrespect the QO program of professional authenticators
I just thought it was necessary to point out the pro's and con's of it and that it's a completely different animal than an "in hand" exam and paper certification.

And sometimes a QO has been used to help in the decision of certain items in question. For example I recall an old set of ELP sigs that Epperson helped resolve.

OTOH, I would put quite a bit of faith in an Epperson quick opinion.  Epperson helped me a great deal a couple of times.  And, I agree with Tim G.  Nice discussion, goodcat.

James- Roger Epperson gave me a quick opinion that something was authentic, then saw the same item a few years later on RACC and while nobody asked him, said it was secretarial. Then he doesnt respond...

Toss a coin up in the air, it's just how they feel one day to the next.

Point taken.  But nobody can beat PSA QO when it comes to ineptitude...imo...and experience.  =-)

Quick opinion market is nothing more than a money grab from the TPA’s to capture those who are too cheap to pay for authentication.

Similar to a college offering GED testing for those to dumb and lazy to go to college.

Trying to find a way to make money off those with who you normally not make anything from.

In the case of Beatles autographs, there are forgery styles that can fool even experienced collectors, such as the Joe Long forgeries. In those cases, quick opinions can be extremely useful, especially when they include some context.

if i ask you for a quick opinion, im asking if you think it is authentic, not hey, if i gave you an extra 30 minutes what would you think...

Im also not asking you to just tell me it isnt an obvious forgery.

not being difficult, i think if someone asks for a quick opinion, they are saying, hey, i want to buy this and then get an loa from you. to their surprise, they could buy it and then you tell them now that ive had a chance to look at it, it's fake.

I agree. That isn’t the standard. Some signatures require very little effort, while others require a substantial amount of research. If you’re going to charge for an opinion, take whatever time is necessary to provide a confident one. Otherwise, issue a refund.

I completely agree with the refund statement

That to me is one of the problems about QO and certificates.

If a TPA gets its wrong, they should be accountable to the consumer.

Yeah, it's really important for TPAs to reconsider their opinion when additional info becomes available that points the other way, but it's difficult thing to do to varying degrees. Sometimes these things become more clear over time and with additional exemplars. It could take a day or it could take years.

+1 jackie gleason anyone?

Xweisey

After 3 pages of explanations, I don't know how to make you understand.

If you go to your car mechanic with a problem and he says it could be an X problem in the first few minutes but later says the problem is actually Y after further examination.... Do you jump down his throat for telling you his quick opinion at the beginning?

Or do you understand that it's not always easy to diagnose something right from the start?

I could make an opinion about you based on what you have said but I might have a different opinion of you if I met you in person.

Maybe an opinion from someone else will be the correct opinion about you?

Did any of my examples make any sense to you?

If nothing is sinking in then maybe look up the definition of "opinion" and that might help.

Opinion = an estimation of the quality or worth of someone or something.

You seem to expect people to be perfect and or infallible.

And... I am also not being difficult but you are making it a difficult challenge to get through to you... In my opinion of course.

Or maybe I'm comprehending your words completely incorrectly
