Where have all of the vintage Hollywood collectors gone?

One thing I've noticed recently on the board is that collectors of vintage/classic Hollywood seemed to be missing in action. Or maybe posts are not gaining traction and getting buried in discussions?  I do miss the sharing and opinioning of that kind of material.

You are indeed :)

Makes me think of all those Gilmour/Polly CD's - some were had for free (like mine) but the markup was to $350 by some for resale. No one has a gun to my head regarding what I pay, That's on me. Many times we see in here folks who honestly think they scored a $14,000 item for $650 or whatever. Knowledge is key. Such a mistake would not be made with a modicum of research into the item.

Yes, research is key in this hobby...and I think we both agree is part of the fun.  Totally agree, knowledge is key.

But again, many collectors buy based upon what they believe is the knowledge & integrity of a dealer and/or if it has a COA or LOA from Beckett, JSA, PSA, etc..

Perhaps its something like a Dr.'s opinion - some newer collectors might feel what can a layman say? I just don't understand what it is about autographs that makes logic disappear. Folks go to all kinds of extreme lengths when buying a vintage car (getting thier own mechanic etc,) or a valued painting for that matter. With graphs people sometimes accept a slip of paper from "no one" after dropping several $$$ - something they might never do with other valuable items.

I think most people just accept autographs at face value.  I belong to several online classic Hollywood discussion groups.  There are constantly people uploading "autographed" photos of various film stars that are secretarial or forgeries. They are not doing this in malice at all but just showing something they have run across online of the group's favorite star.  People respond enthusiastically when this is done....not having a clue that it's not real.

Nothing worse than going to a friend, acquaintance or family member house and there it is smack dab front and center on the wall, the pride and joy of the collection a big fake autograph! Do you tell them or hold it inside? I have seen some terrible Deniro’s and Pacino’s on the wall. A big one is the Goodfellas poster supposedly signed by the cast. I usually just give them leading questions like is this from eBay and so and so seller, or was the COA written on toilet paper? I try to raise some doubt in the mind without being the bearer of bad news.

It absolutely is.

And if they didn't come in here and explicitly say that they were reducing prices to reflect accurate values, I'd agree with you.

It's one thing to overcharge. I'll laugh at you, but you won't hear one complaint from me.

It's another thing to overcharge & lie about it.

Mike -  There have been so many loops in this thread that I've lost track of what we're each talking about.  What is your comment a reference to?

You don't even need to go that far back.

On Jeopardy a few months ago there was a clue about an actor that it even included his photo, yet none of the contestants could figure out that it was James Garner.

I'm still here! :)

May be an image of one or more people

Nick, as a gift to you I am including a photo that I cut out of the National Enquirer over fifty years ago. According to the article, these are the lifts that Humphrey Bogart used in his scenes with Ingrid Bergman while filming Casablanca. Obviously, Humphrey was shorter than Ingrid.

My favorite from back then --the thirties and forties--is James Cagney, but Humphrey is in my top five along with Clark. My father's favorite was Herbert Marshall. Does anyone remember him?

Nice! I have never seen that photo before. Pretty amazing! Yes, I know Herbert Marshall and even his daughter Sarah who was in one of my favorite Twilight Zone episodes Little Girl Lost. I had a dual signature of Marshall with his lady at the time Gloria Swanson but sold it a long time ago.
