Adding Chevy Chase to my 45ish Year Old SNL Vinyl Jacket with Belushi, Radner etc...
Just wondering everyones thoughts on adding Chevy to this vintage item. I asked this previously about a mail-in event and decided it was way too risky to get it done by mail. I have an opportunity to meet Chevy in person next month for about $200 I could get my item signed at his table. I really want to get this done, probably cover up Murray's signature with a sticky note with an arrow pointing to the area for Chevy to sign. (Trying to bypass any potential animosity with Murray signing so close to Chevy's picture)
If I do decide to get this done, what would be the best pen to use to try and match the others? Any other tips would be very welcome. Ill need to purchase tickets by tomorrow to save a little money. Hoping I can make my decision before then.

Anyone have opinions on if I shouldn't get this done? Im leaning towards doing it but uncertain about which pen I should use. Would love some advice on this one just to be sure im not missing something. When I had PSA authenticate it, the worker mentioned its a shame chase isn't on it as well.

Not sure why Bill Murray is there as he isn't pictured or listed, but anyway....
I wouldn't worry about matching the other pens - most of them aren't particularly great. I'd use a black ultra-fine point Sharpie. Just test it right before he signs to make sure it's primed.

Thanks for the suggestion. Murray signed because this item was supposedly obtained in New Orleans during the second season when they were there for mardi gras. Murray had to sign somewhere if at all so it makes sense for him to sigh near the guy he replaced.
I'm hesitant to use a sharpie marker. My worry is it will stand out way too much and distract from the other signatures. I have no experience with any other felt tip markers though.
I'm almost certain at this point I'll buy the tickets. Still have a bit of time to test some markers and do some research. Maybe ill bring an old beat up LP cover to dick blick and test the markers they have.

The Ultra-fine point Sharpie is not the fine point Sharpie that most people use (as you probably know). It will be a bit darker but it should be more stable and consistent than some of those on your album, and the thickness will match. If you really wanted to go overboard you could get one of those Sharpie packs with a color selection, and maybe there would be a gray one there.

Gilda signed her name in ballpoint. It may be another option if I cant find better. Ill for sure test the ultra fine point sharpie on an old jacket and compare as well but im sure im going to have to test many different types before I make an absolute decision. All my life I've been stuck on regular sharpies, ballpoint for baseballs,and just recently paint pens on a few items so this is a new learning experience for me
Here's a picture I downloaded from an old article that seems to match the pens they used. If anyone knows what kind of markers these are, please let me know. This was in 1977

Might well have been a Flair felt-tip but that and all the pens mentioned (except Sharpies) are subject to fading from light.

Ah good to know. I didn't even think about that aspect. Added to the points I need to research.
I just purchased advanced tickets and am all set. Unless chevy decides to cancel, it looks like I'll be getting this done

I'd try for a pen that looks most like the signatures. Also DO NOT worry about him seeing the Bill Murray signature. Sure, he doesn't like him, but that's not going to keep him from signing it. Especially since you paid, and...he's smart enough to realize other people will be signing an item like that.

Def complete it while you can, otherwise you'll regret not doing so.
As for the pen, I'd just get it done in a normal sharpie. That will get you the best quality signature that will last. The other signatures have aged and they're not all done by the same type of pen anyways.

Thanks, tickets are purchased and im all set to go. My concern was mainly if anyone I thought this should be left as is since its a vintage piece. Part of me thinks its wrong to add another signature 46 years later but it takes years for people to complete other cast signed items sometimes so im probably overthinking it

I disagree. If you do it in a regular black Sharpie, it will stand out too much. But if you use a ballpoint pen, it might not show up. So perhaps use one of those fine tip ones as people suggested. ALSO...be prepared for this (as I've had it done, for example, when Journey autographed an album, them writing crap on other bandmembers faces, like fake mustaches and stuff) -- IF, Chevy Chase does do something to Bill Murray's name (crosses it out or something), be prepared to sue the sh** out of him.
NOW...if he writes something for an inscription like (Murray wasn't even here in our first season!). That's fine, and adds nicely to the piece, so don't sweat that.

I'm starting to agree with you about the fine tip pen. Ive read felt tip pens have fade resistant ink now but I still need more research. Ill be testing fine tip sharpies vs felt tip pens later this week.
This is why I wanted to put a srlticky note over Murray's signature. I pictured him getting mad and crossing it out as one of the scenarios. Even though its technically destruction, im not sure its wise to fight someone who can afford way better lawyers that I ever could. Its best to avoid that situation altogether. Still debating about covering with the sticky note. Also, depending on how fast he has to pump out signatures, it might be wise anyways so there's no guess work and he would know exactly where I'd like him to sign without needing to ask. Honestly, ive never been to one of these conventions for in person autograps so I have no idea what to expect
