Merc the signature is authentic, and it has the say hey sticker which validates it. there are much better Mays signatures for sale on ebay all the time, reasonably priced. his older signatures tend to be larger and with better letter formation.

Is it that high because of the inscription? Seems like it's fairly easy to get an authentic Mays ball in the $100 - 125 range.

Definitely do not pay $400 for a Mays ball. You should be able to get a nice ball for $100-175ish MAX.

If you need one in a hurry (i.e. without bidding), let me know. Oddly enough, I have one I've been considering selling. It has the Say Hey sticker, along with PSA and Steiner certification (which, honestly, seems like overkill to me).

$400 . . . just kidding. I'm actually not 100% sure, since I've had it for a few years and can't definitely recall what I paid for it at the moment. It wasn't cheap but it was a better than average deal for a Mays.

I thought for sure I posted a photo at some point, but apparently I didn't. The signature is clean and bold from what I recal, but there are no addition inscriptions.

I can post it when I get home, then if you want other opinions on it from forum members (just to be sure) they can chime in. I actually meant to post it because I thought the authentication was a bit bizarre and was wondering what the deal was. The Say Hey sticker is below the signature in the usual spot. Then there's also a PSA sticker on the side, and a Steiner cert referencing the ball and the PSA authentication.

400 is way overpriced for a mays ball. you can get a nice example for under a hundred if you search around ebay.

I know he is too young to know the difference but when he gets older, he may appreciate one of Willie's older signatures, what do you think?

I may be wrong, but I think there is a trend with those stickers being less than cleanly affixed. So that might not really be a red flag. I'm not even remotely a Mays expert, but that signature seems to look okay to me.

here is an example of an older May signature on an official NL ball. I really like the old NL and AL balls better when collecting vintage signatures like Mays. its a lot less than the price of the one that you posted originally.

Not a bad idea. I often like to stress going after good examples of autographs you want and avoiding especially bad examples altogether, even if the price is low.

I'm guessing that the main tradeoff, if any, is that superior vintage examples may tend to go for a bit more money and may lack some of the "airtight" (if you can even call it that) authentication of some newer ones. Still might be worth it.

I would give that one 8-9, as it looks very nice for one of his current signatures, which are getting a little shaky. if you can get it for 50, its a steal. good luck!
