I've seen at least a couple more copies of this set. I don't know who owns the original.

Ballroom's exemplar's are top notch and we are very lucky to have him on here to root our the reprints, color xeroxes, etc. I hate when people sell copies of originals as it is too easy and pass them off as the real deal. (If not for this site, that is).

Thank you, Bruce.

Apparently this is the original. The image was scanned from an old It's Only Rock and Roll catalog.

Remarkable research, Ballroom. Thank you. Can you tell for sure that the one certified by AAU/Drew Max is a copy of this one and not the same original piece?

Thanks, Steve. I'm not sure. Does the original look a bit sharper, and maybe missing some of the flaws present on the original?

Ballroom, the scan from the auction catalog you just posted is higher quality with better lighting, but it does have a few surface flaws not visible on the AAU/Drew Max piece. But I don't think that's conclusive that they're not the same piece. The AAU piece was saved as a pretty low-quality JPG, which degrades some of the detail, it's lighting wasn't as good, and they could have photoshopped out some of the flaws. A higher quality image would be needed to tell for sure, and even better, an in-person inspection.

This set is a highlighted example on the Richard Faser M.D. Forensic Authenticator site.

guys thanks for all the replies especially Ballroom!

This set is about to go to auction and as been checked by 3 experts, surely they would spot a photo copy from a mile away. I'd love a good full set one day but i don't like paying over the odds from dealers.

I'll do a bit more research and let you all know.

cheers

Chris,

What auction, and which experts?

Hi Steve, it's in the annual Beatles auction in Liverpool, Ian Wallace and two other knowledgeable Beatles people have said it's good, I would have thought they would spot a copy. I've emailed back to them with jpeg of the known copies to get there response.

The story i've been told is the piece has been in a collection in Hull for years and was bought at a car boot, the seller was a lady selling her ex husband stuff, I take all these sort of things with a pinch of salt.

I do some business with Ian Wallace and have always found him to be honest and helpful, i've not mentioned this thread to him just yet, i don't want to cause him any embarrassment.

Hi, yes I've seen these in this year's catalogue (annual Beatles auction in Liverpool), I know the guy who received this set personally in 1963 and who still owns the original... all others including these and the its only rock n roll set are copies of the originals. There is only one set which is not for sale currently. The original recipient made copies and sold these on eBay years ago, people have even cut them up and sold as individual or part sets, there are numerous examples of these floating around. I hope this helps.
