I'm trying to keep an open mind...

Just came across this ebay listing; the signature is unlike any I've seen in 37 years of collecting.  Anybody wish to weigh in?  Seen anything similar?  If it's bogus, does that imply that the LOA from Spence is also?  I'm just...in awe, I guess.  But again, I'm trying to keep an open mind.  Like most people on this site, I'm here to learn.

Here's the link:  http://www.ebay.com/itm/Extremely-Bold-Babe-Ruth-Single-Signed-Auto...

Thank you,

Travis Wallace

The second b is really strange and so is the R. Spence or no spence, that's too much money to take a chance on...unless you're Bill Gates or Donald Trump.

I noticed the same issues with the same two letters

I agree the upstroke of the "b" is unusual, but I agree with JSA that the autograph is authentic. I look at the whole autograph and think it is legit. I have seen a few other examples with a similar "b". The "R" is not that unusual IMO.

By the way, the LOA checks out on the JSA web site so it was obviously authenticated.

Thank you for the comments.  I truly doubt its authenticity.  The more I look at it, the less I like it.  We all have "off" days when our handwriting varies more than usual, but there are just far too many oddities in this one signature.  Nobody has mentioned this, but one of the most glaring things for me is the difference in size between the capital B and capital R.  That's an extremely unusual thing for anybody to do in their signature--but especially odd for a celebrity who likely signed autographs every day of his life.

Guess that is why it is called "an opinion." There are many authenticated examples by both JSA and PSA/DNA in which the "R" is much larger than the "B".

A quick search on Ebay clearly shows that if that were the "tell" to a forgery, there are many authenticated examples of them for sale now.

We can agree to disagree on this one. That is what this forum presents the opportunity to do.

Surprised they went with JSA over PSA. Does that mean PSA didn't like it? Who knows. I would get PSA to sticker it also just to add value. 2nd b is weird but not all balls are cookie cutter. Go Penguins!

Congratulations, Ian! There's nothing like major sports championships to unite a city and community. My Royals won one last year, and man it feels good. Now if the Chiefs could be more like the Steelers...

Ahhh, I am an hour from Philly so I would prefer the Flyers! However they are a Pa team so Id rather they get it. The Flyers have a rivalry with the Pens though so a lot of guys here hate them.

Here's a large image of the ball:

I'm nowhere near as good as many others here on Babe Ruth autographs, but I think it's got a decent chance of being genuine. It's a great one to discuss here—thank you for posting it, Travis!

So..if you folks think the ball is good, here is a similar one I've had since the early 1990's. This came with a cert from Herman Darvick. I've always questioned it because of the 2nd b.

Best, Ray

Personally I'm not a "fan" of yours Ray. Best thing to do with these things is have PSA look at them. Autograph magazine approved just doesn't go very far on the resell market.
