I have my eye on a nice self-caricature from Alfred Hitchcock. There is a date of 1972 lightly written on the back of it.  No question about the fine integrity of the dealer and their reputation...stellar. Just looking for some thoughts and input on it from "other eyes" before pulling the trigger....

Etienne, Eric is right about the paper and ink, also that condition can cause brittle paper…If your second Hitchcock did not have paper problems, In my humble opinion, it would be a keeper. A nice sketch and autograph.

Thanks, David.  At least the scan can go into the "exemplar file".

"...also that condition can cause brittle paper..."

Indeed. That is true of this type of paper w/o ink.

There are collectors of these kind of pulp paperbacks.  I wonder what they do to preserve and/or restore the paper.

Here's a more true to life image of the Dell paperback Hitchcock sketch and autograph. It turns out the previous image I added of it was heavily photoshopped.  You can still see the hallowing around the writing....but it looks more natural and not as glaring as the photoshopped version.

Anyone else on how this looks to them? The book was printed in 1963 so I would assume the sketch and signature are from around that time.

To me it is in the act of self destruction. Avoid. The negatives outweigh any positives IMO.

Hi, Eric- I'm trying to get a better feeling for his habits. Do you mean avoid because of the tanning to the page or because the sketch and writing don't look good?

Also, what about the one at the beginning of this thread...does it look good? Again, I"m trying to get a handle on what looks good and what doesn't.
