Hello:
I am new to the world of autograph collecting. Bought this ball on live auctioneers. Listing stated unauthenticated but I didn’t realize it could mean possibly not real. Have always expected items on that service were generally assumed to be authentic. Very naive on my part… Beckett failed this as not likely genuine. Was wondering if someone out there could give me an additional opinion on this. I have since looked at several Gehrig autographs and other than the Lou not being in line with Gehrig I don’t know how to identify this as not genuine. Any help is appreciated. Trying to learn from my mistakes even though it was a pretty big one I guess.

Definitely not real IMO.
It’s not a horrible forgery. The “L” and “G” are close. Bottom of G is atypical, “e and h” seem off. If you’re new to collecting it would fool most.
Best with Ruth/Gehrig to look for those with both Beckett and PSA letters in my opinion. Less chance of a bad piece when both full letters are present (especially those with Grad on BAS and Kevin Keating on the PSA). Decent examples won’t be cheap. Expect to pay $8,000+ for something moderately attractive. Hope you didn’t lose too much. Ruth and Gehrig are heavily forged and some are really, really well done.
Thanks for the info. I lost enough for it to sting but I will be very careful going forward.
Sorry to hear that. How long have you owned it?
I just got it a couple of weeks ago. After a pretty extensive Google review this particular auction house has a record of having some suspect merchandise. Just have to stop being so trusting…. Have always had good luck on LiveAuctioneers in the past. Just haven’t ever bought an Autograph before. Will just have to do more research on what I am buying in the future. Tried to dispute the sale but they word their listings in such a way that the buyer doesn’t really have any remediation.
Yes you do. When someone commits fraud their terms and conditions mean nothing. Post a link.
How did you pay?
Credit card. I filed a dispute with LiveAuctioneers and my credit card. LiveAuctioneers stated they wouldn’t agree to any remediation. I would have taken this on the chin as me not knowing enough about what I was buying but the frustrating thing is they have sold multiple items with almost identical signatures as mine. So it doesn’t seem to be an isolated event. I haven’t heard from my credit card company yet so maybe I will get lucky and they will be able to get some of it back.
Post a link to the listing.
Their “legal out” could be listing it (intentionally) as “unauthenticated”. I’d still dispute with CC. They know what they are doing.
For the amount of money ($4,000.00) you spent on that, I would go right to your Credit Card company and file a dispute.
