Cate and Elijah tell the whole story here. A tale of woe, deceit, and failure, although they share the spirit of mystery and adventure that the film portends. :)

Now here's what I fail to understand. With such a rampant forgery industry in this market, don't any of the stars or their associates, friends, or family ever run across one of these, either in their travels or just surfing the net, see something like this, or any other of the millions of forgeries out there for perusal? The conversation that follows, something like, "Hey Elijah, you have got to see this (shows it to Elijah, who spits out the coffee he was just swishing in his mouth, some of it going up his nose)"?  Then when they're both done laughing, not only over the forgery, but the coffee too, Elijah or his associate start to find out who owns it, who sold it to that victim, and/or call the police once they realize someone may be or may have been defrauded out of a serious chunk of change, in part, by a forgery of their signature?

I suspect the reason would be not wanting to get involved in legal proceedings that might take both time and money.  Mark Hamill is the one star that stands out in trying his best to stop forgeries.  I think it got overwhelming for him after while.  Sadly impulse and emotion are the best friends of the forger.

Unfortunate. 10 of the most often forged signors start making public waves and directly or indirectly go after the forgers stealing their ink and maybe 50% of the industry's forgers look for a new line of work. All it takes is to make a few examples and the waves of potential penalties would wash over the hobby with resounding effect.

Midway through forging Elijah Wood, a forger stops after penning "Elijah", and before continuing, thinks, "Wait a minute. Didn't I read something about Elijah's manager's court testimony in a forgery trial sending the guy to jail for a 1-3 year stretch and they took his business away?" (goes to the internet to check, confirms, then returns to the drafting table, rolls the poster up and lights the BBQ with it).  :)

its like whacking a mole-another always pops up- forget about jail sending a message-doesn't work with selling weed, stopping gangs, ponzi schemes, etc- wont work here cause such a low barrier to entry for those looking to make a quick buck

Yeah, but I have my own idea about the character of forgers. Not to praise them at all, but selling drugs and most other hard crimes requires some degree of courage. A pair. Drug dealers typically risk life and limb with every sale to some degree. I would think that the consequences of prison life mean very little to them, since even that isn't more of a risk than the act of drug dealing itself.

But this! Forgery? It's the act of a coward. Someone who lacks the guts to earn a living and get his hands dirty day after day, whether completely legal or not. Someone that would probably be very scared of jail and having Butch McDick as a celly.

It's only the forger, the paper, his implements, and his exemplars. He doesn't risk anything. Falling off a scaffold, fighting a fire, or even meeting someone he knows is strapped to deal drugs. I would think that a forger, in essence, stealing the valor of these players and stars, would stop and think more than once if examples started to be made of facing jail-time, freakin' cowards that they are.
