Indeed.

This is not a hobby if you have no trust in anything or anybody. We just try to do the best we can and find some pleasure out of the experience. I'm glad we are so entertaining though.

Of course there are talented forgerers. That is more than obvious. DUH

But Old Appleton doesn't seem to believe there are talented authenticator's who can pick out some forgeries.

And that's the gripe here

His one sided opinion is more than conspicuous and his knowledge of forgeries makes no damn sense for someone who says he only collects no name signatures.

Plus he stated in his profile to be an expert authenticator.

NONE of his comments make common sense and I smell a rat

I enjoy all aspects of this "hobby". Apples seems to have a way of coming across a bit arrogant and it rubs people the wrong way.

He's arrogant with unfound sense

That makes him an idiot in my eyes

ramble tamble

Getting back to the OP topic - wanted to share that I've made a new group on Facebook dedicated to Floyd autographs & collectors. Feel free to join as I will be discussing authenticity, IP success, band news, and more.

awesome Seamus

I'll be joining that group if you'll have an old fool like me as a member ;)

Shawn C is my name and a photo with my bike

thx brutha

I don't facebook although I wish you well with the group. I'm sure it will be packed with good, solid information.

I joined and it's pretty cool so far.

I like groups dedicated to specific interests

I do mostly Rush and adventure riding groups. FB has it's perks if you avoid the daily mundane posts about what folks had to eat or what they watch on TV or the multitude of meme selfie idiots

Generalized statements about authenticity are not helpful. We are all humans and subject to error. Yes, there are very talented forgery experts who can fool even the most advanced collectors. That is why having a discussion of a specific autograph is necessary and helpful. It, at least, narrows the possibility of someone spending their money unwisely.

When we start picking apart those because they did not word their response in a way we like, that's getting overly technical. Why throw out a generalized statement.

Collectors do care about getting it "right". There are collectors who are far superior on specific signatures than most and deserve credit for helping others. Collectors are not a bunch of buffoons just because they have a different priority or collecting interest.

It's a big boat and there's room for us all. Disagreements are encouraged in a respectful manner. You're either a part of the solution or part of the problem. If you are neutral, then just sit back and enjoy the show. You just may learn something!

Joe, I totally agree with your earlier statement about trust. If you cannot believe in the authenticity of any autograph, however "right" it appears, then autograph collecting is not for you - unless you just obtain "in-person" autographs yourself of course.

I am a bit of a risk taker myself and have no problem in buying autographs that are not authenticated or are being sold by private sellers who nobody knows and who most certainly do not issue lifetime guarantees. I've come a cropper a few times  but most of the dodgy purchases I know about were made before the days of the internet when it was far harder to do proper research. Ironically, most were also made at specialist autograph auction sales and one of the ones that wasn't had a lifetime guarantee from when it was sold previously.

Getting back to the Floyd album, I think it wouid be incredibly difficult to forge all four signatures successfully. It is possible that someone might be able to forge one band member's autograph to complete the set but if I had an album beautifully by three band members I'd be reluctant to risk discrediting these by forging the fourth.
