This is currently being bid on. I asked for provenance, and they came back saying what is on the site is all they have. What is on the site is...

A Hard Day’s Night soundtrack album signed on the back cover in black ballpoint, “George Harrison,” “Paul McCartney,” “John Lennon,” and “Ringo Starr.” Scattered toning and foxing to back cover, and scattered creases and surface marks to front cover, otherwise fine condition. The record is included. Accompanied by a full letter of authenticity from PSA/DNA, grading the Lennon, McCartney, and Starr signatures “8,” and the Harrison signature a “9.” Also accompanied by a letter of authenticity from noted Beatles expert Frank Caiazzo, which reads, in part: “These signatures date from 1964, shortly after the album was released. ‘A Hard Day’s Night’ is a highly desirable title to have signed by the Beatles…the ultimate in any true fan’s collecting experience…very few documented examples of ‘A Hard Day’s Night’ autographed by the Beatles exist, and in fact, only 6 copies of this extremely rare and desirable title signed by the band have surfaced to date.” Pre-certified Roger Epperson/REAL and RR Auction COA.

What provenance are you looking for???? "this extremely rare and desirable title signed by the band have surfaced to date.”- Big $$$$$ I guess!!!

No problems with the authenticators... Just checking that no one is worried there is nothing about when this was signed, any background information, no story etc. being available.

I don't know the provenance, but ask R&R.

As for value, there are about 8-10 band-signed "Hard Day's Night" albums known, all Parlophone (UK) release. I'm not aware of any US release albums. There are now 18-22 "With the Beatles" known. Two sold in the last year, one by Tracks and one by Frank Caiazzo, and both sold for about $50,000 I believe--could be a little less but not much. HDN is worth more, all things being equal, so go from there.

Steve, Thanks. You misunderstood the provenance issue. I did ask them when they had other than for the authenticators information and RR's guarantee. Background? Story etc. They checked with consignor and said, they have nothing other than the information provided with the article.

I understand what you're asking for, but these signatures were signed almost half a century ago and may have changed ownership a number of times.  The type of "date, location" provenance that some modern in-person dealers can offer is a bit of a tall order for this particular type of item.

Rich is correct.  These items can change hands relatively frequently. Even something this rare.

But Ranjan is right to ask.  Typically, a bona fide auction house or seller will reveal whatever is known about the provenance up front.

But Caiazzo is the gold standard for the Beatles.  Add on the others and this is as solid as you can get.

I have all the respect in the world for the authenticators referenced above.  they are light years ahead of me and most of us with regards to beatles items. but I have to say that if I saw that lennon alone on a photo, 3x5, album, or anything, I wouldnt bid a quarter on it.  its so non-typical, especially the formation of the "o" in lennon. very unusual, but again that is why they are experts and I'm just a collector.  They have hundreds if not thousands of exemplars to compare to, so I am sure there are similar lennon's out there. I just have never seen one.

but no matter what, it is a very desirable and rare item!

I think the Ringo signature looks pretty unusual too.

yeah, I noticed that too, but not as strange as the lennon.

Ranjan,

I think your about as good as gold as your going to get on this one as far as authentication, unless a video tape appeared of all the beatles signing it, lol. If it comes with a legit Caizzo cert alone, verified by frank, that would be enough for me to bid if i wanted it and had the money. But then the other certs from PSA, pre certed by roger and R and R. You just cant beat that. I havent looked at the item or price but im sure your paying for that peace of mind too.

Good luck

Chris

Terrier, Ballroom--you're right. All the signatures but George's look a bit loose to me. What a great piece to discuss. It would be great for Roger to comment and even Jason Cornthwaite from Tracks. Here's another Hard Day's Night album to compare with:
