For $75 PSA/DNA told me they couldn't tell if this old autograph is real of fake, they rejected it saying Authenticity Questionable. For $75 Beckett only said one thing, that this is obviously the work of an autopen. So one company can't tell what it is and one company is sure it's an autopen. Does anybody out there have an opinion on whether or not this is a real, fake or autopen??Cary Grant autograph?

No Autopen in 1939. Robot Pen in 1937. Stamp? The ink deposits look very odd to me.

Could it have been a fountain pen? They still used them in the 30s and 40s.

I still do. I own many fountain pen sigs - see this signed photo for normal ink deposit. What is the substrate - what is it on? Is that a clean stop and start in the "G"? Is there any scratch from a nib?

Something is not right with this autograph. Whatever it is the autograph is not authentic, IMO.

John, it is not a bad idea to screen stuff here before submitting at those fees.

I only just discovered this site. But thank you for the advice.

I'm always happy to help as are many. :)

I was guaranteed the authenticity of this Cary Grant by the seller. But "Oh Boy" did he get mad and highly incensed when I told him I was going to submit it to the PSA for authentication. He does not like the third party authenticators and has recently adjusted his return policy to disallow the authentication opinions of the JSA, PSA/DNA and Beckett. Fortunately for me, the half dozen autographs I bought for him that turned out to be Not Genuine I bought before he changed his return policy. The seller doth protest too much, me thinks.

Red flag for sure.

I find it incredible that neither PSA nor Beckett could not easily determine this Cary Grant signature was not authentic. That simply blows my mind!

It is incredible! Also unacceptable.
