"People are belittling me too." ....CRY ME A RIVER
I hear ya Steve....I'll just go over to Autograph planet where they love me so much! They have pictures of me and everything!
Fudd...don't go! We love you even more than they do.
I know that's hard to believe...
but it's true.
Smack talk affects our effectiveness. It scares people off; both people who need help and those who want to offer their help.
We need you here, Fudd. The only thing I'm asking you to do is not tell people what you really think of them.
Dustin,
You started this discussion asking what members thought about the Mathewson ball, but you demeaned those who told you they thought it was fake. Why?
Why did you even ask if you had already decided? It doesn't make any sense unless your purpose was to try to make people here look bad. It's a tactic of the forgery industry, which is why you got some of the members' dander up.
I just do not understand how all of you consider yourselves to be experts in the field. What experience does everybody here have?
Dustin, I have never considered myself an expert. But I do consider myself quite knowledgeable.
I learn something new every day about autographs. Every day.
Chris,
You are being modest. Christopher Williams is in all probability the number one Mantle and Jeter expert in the World. I am not kidding there. There are many members on here who are extremely knowledgeable, and indeed are experts on these sigs and others, but Chris is the top dog when it comes to Mantle and Jeter, at least in my opinion. He certainly is an expert, and literally is probably the best at Mantle and Jeter in the world. Far better than PSA, JSA, or any TPA.
The baseball guys on here never cease to blow my mind. I dont know much at all about baseball graphs, but i enjoy reading the threads b/c the guys on here are so knowledgeable about them. And if your getting an overwhelming NO on an item, you can bet that 100 percent, its bad. You will find no better opinions on the net.
What makes these guys experts, is that many have devoted there lives to studying these graphs and exposing forgers. And thats much different from someone who is very knowledgeable and say...goes to work 9 to 5 for PSA authenticating baseball graphs. Im betting that quite a few authenticators are enthusiasts who are extremely knowledgeable, yet are a far cry from devoting there lives to obtaining this knowledge. Many of the guys here have. It really is pretty amazing
Carl, that is very flattering of you to write.
This hobby can, and does, keep one humble. Every time you think "you know it all," a new variation of a certain autograph is discovered or your "eye" sees something new.
I have no idea what is in Dustin's head or what he is thinking. I can only observe, based on his comments, that he really "wants to believe" the Christy Mathewson is authentic.
One thing is a certainty and that is you cannot save a person from themselves.
You can learn to identify most forgeries and other fakes yourself by studying and discussing autographs, Dustin. But when you find one you want that looks OK to you, get an expert opinion before you buy it--preferably in person. It doesn't have to be a third party authenticator. There are a lot of dealers with very strong expertise in certain autographs and genres.
I am sorry. I just wanted to believe that it was a good buy I guess.
That's why we get so emotional about forgeries in our hobby.
Years ago I started to finally blame the buyers of crap like this. They are half the problem when it comes to forgeries in our hobby.
Forgers and the sellers of forgeries are very aware that 80% of people who buy autographs, have ZERO knowledge of autographs and they prey on that.
They prey on the fact that wannabe autograph collectors "want to believe" that a certain autograph is real.
That's why Ebay sellers of forgeries are successful. They count on wannabe autograph collectors to buy their garbage.
I was criticized for a long time for calling buyers of forgeries "morons."
If it weren't for those 80% of so-called autograph collectors purchasing crap. sellers of forgeries would be out of business!!!
