eBay Case for Fake Autograph Decided in Seller's Favor

I purchased an autograph on eBay for several hundred dollars. Upon receiving it, I was immediately suspicious and requested to return to it. The seller refused and escalated the case to eBay. I paid for the PSA/DNA quick opinion which came back not likely genuine. I did not want to waste the money for the full authentication when the autograph is very obviously not real. I sent eBay the quick opinion screenshot. I got an email today that the case was decided in the seller's favor. I am a little surprised by this. As a former eBay seller, I know that eBay generally decides in the buyer's favor. There are a lot of idiot eBay buyers, but I believe that I have an actual good reason for a return. I am going to send it in the PSA/DNA for a full authentication, which I am confident will come back not genuine. Is there any way to re-open an eBay case at that time? Otherwise, I suppose I can dispute it with my credit card company which I used to fund the Paypal transactions.

Paypal is very good at getting your money refunded and you can file a claim anytime within 180 days. Count this as a lesson well learned, if you do not learn from this you are apt to repeat it. Some lessons cost more than other lessons. Paypal just helped me in a big way. I sent 34 items into PSA to get authenticated and only 13 came back legit. Very expensive lesson. Paypal was able to get my money back on the items and most were 5 months old and all bought off ebay. Now I either buy items that are authenticated already by the big 3 or from dealers that are honorable. Buyer beware ebay is a very dangerous playground for an autograph collector. I am new to collecting but I have learned a tremendous amount from just that one PSA lesson. Good Luck with your case.

Well written, Jason.

Although I have to state that Ebay is the most dangerous place to buy autographs for those who are not familiar with autographs.

For those that are knowledgeable in autographs, there are some great deals to be found.

It pays to take the time to learn and study autographs of those that you desire.

Did any of the sellers of the bad stuff offer you a refund before you contacted Paypal? Even after 5 months they should back their items on authenticity. Just curious.

5 months after a purchase? That's a bit ridiculous

FYI - for the most part if eBay makes a ruling paypal upholds it

not ridiculous at all. a decent seller should offer a lifetime guarantee on authenticity.

I agree BUT a lot of sellers aren't scammers at all and just sell what they believe are authentic autographs. To have someone purchase something then 5 months later seek a refund is a but ridiculous. I mean send it in earlier etc

All my items were outside of ebay allowed time for resolution. I was buying over a period of like 4 months and then sent it to PSA/DNA. They had it for a month and when I got it back I was happy until I opened the the box and started looking at the results. Talk about a gut punch. Like I said lesson well learned. Only 2 of the sellers let me return for refunds the other cases were filed directly with paypal. After that I educated myself a lot and then joined this site. Filled with lots of smarter people then me in the autograph world.  Now if I do not have an answer I can just ask the question here.

Nothing worse than finding out what you have is a forgery but I do think people should be getting things authenticated as soon as they get it until waiting months later. If that makes sense

EDIT: I just thought of a lot things worse, but a fake auto is bad! Lol

I didn't even know of PSA when I first started then one of my family members asked me how do you know their real. And I said I checked the sellers feedback and they had all positive. It got me thinking though so I finally boxed them up and off they went. I really am a beginner and not totally stupid but I know better now. One of the sellers was maguffins ( 6012Green star icon for feedback score in between 5,000 to 9,999) he had very high feedback and a lot of autographed cards I Liked. I bought 9 items off him and tried to message him through ebay but he blocks all messages and questions. I then reported him to ebay to no avail. Next step was the paypal claims. Lots of sellers with fake autographs on ebay and they leave them there to prey on the innocent. The fees they earn let them to turn a blind eye to these predators.

I will now send items in sooner if they do not already have a valid COA from psa, jsa or ga.

You may also want to post up a link and article on the seller to warn others as bad publicity may make him change his mind on here.

Hope all is well Mr. Ortiz - Buyers Can contact sellers directly (ebay sends this information with every item purchased) - please e-mail me or any other seller directly in order to remedy a situation.

Thank-you autographmagazine for creating such a wonderful forum for buyers/sellers to professionally discuss these types of situations without prejudice -
