Is this a real Babe Ruth Autographed Photo?

Hi There!

I bought an autographed Babe Ruth photo at a silent auction. It had two contradictory certificates of authentication. One from JSA said they couldn't authenticate and had 10 things they didn't like about the signature. Another from authentic autographs unlimited says it's the real thing. The photo itself is real, as it's an Acme newspicture photo taken from 1940.

I don't have much money in this and what I did spend went to charity, so I am good either way, but I would love to get some opinions on what you might suggest to do to resolve this dilemma. I don't want to spend $250 to get another authentication, but if I did, what would be a good tie breaker? '

I think it's a safe bet most astute collectors would assign more credibility to the JSA opinion.

In terms of getting another cheapie opinion, you could list it yourself on ebay and get your own PSA/DNA Quick Opinion. Or, you could send the scan to a few reputable and experienced auction houses or dealers to see if they are interested in taking it as a consignment. If the answer is "no," you know it's not good. No dealer or auction house would turn away a good Ruth.

One other thing, David Atkatz on the net54 Boards is a very experienced collector who specializes in Ruth and the Yankees. I believe he offers opinions on scans for $10. Google him and you'll find him at the Net54 forum.

Or, you could just post it at the Net54 Forum and there are some experienced collectors who will offer an opinion for free.
