I post the above as just another example of the variety of signatures considered legit, hand-signed items. We've all looked at the dozens of images and posts here and are coming up with our own opinions.
The most upsetting thing about this to me is what people are indirectly saying. If someone states the books are not in Jerry Lee's hand, they are saying someone else signed them. This would mean they are saying he is a liar and a crook. They are saying he lied to a newspaper interviewer about his hand hurting from signing the books. They are saying his wife is also lying about it to fans. These are big claims and I don't think they should be made without solid proof.
I don't know with 100% certainty that Jerry Lee did or did not sign the books. From what I know of the man he would not and has never been shown to rip people off. He loves his fans and has been a great signer over the years. I choose to give him the benefit of the doubt.
Here is the problem I am seeing...
A wide array of unverified exemplars and examples from a wide time period are being used to compare to the books. How do we know the piano key is authentic? Because an eBay seller said so? Maybe it was taken back stage and signed by someone other than JLL. Same can be said for a number of other examples used in this thread. People are also using signatures decades old.
What I am also seeing is some emotion in the argument. "How can you say JLL is a liar?" etc., etc. It should not be about emotion, just the signature analysis using contemporary verified exemplars.
Some people are comfortable with these sigs and some are not. As I wrote previously, some have more risk tolerance than others. Not sure much mind changing is going to happen at this point. :-)
I bet I can find 50 ads where they state "if we didn't see it signed we don't sell it" and photos of the artists signing autographs (these photos can be found anywhere with a simple google search) and none of their stuff is authentic. One of my rules of thumb about ebay is if the ad says "proof photos" the chances of them being authentic drops 90%. People on here with nothing to lose and nothing at stake make some pretty bold statements that sometimes don't hold water.
Been saying this statement for years now....
The piano key isn't from eBay. I provided a link to the listing.
I have a question for Ballroom. Just out of curiosity, do you think any of the JLL images posted in either this book thread or the TTM thread are non-genuine? This is not a knock on u or anything, just want to know your thoughts on if any seem to be not genuine. We all seem to have our doubts on some images, but I get the impression you don't.
I am no expert at all, I only go by my known IPs when looking at other autographs. I can see looking at this guys stuff, that a lot of it is questionable when I compare it to my IP stuff. That's all I am going to say.
