Came across this https://www.expressandstar.com/entertainment/2023/03/09/beatle-mani...
No mention of the "superb Beatles souvenirs" which is odd.
As an aside I love the differencesbetween the adverts for their two gigs at Wolverhampton in 1963. In the first they are a footnote, in the second they occupy 50% of the advert.
In 25 years of collecting and monitoring sales I have never seen such an item come up for sale. In an aside, I have a set of Beatles autographs from the Wolverhampton March appearance on the back page of the programme. It caused some confusion among collectors as history shows that John missed that concert due to flu, yet my item is fully signed (it carries a letter from Tracks). I checked with Tracks who had seen two more fully signed items from that night and later Mark Lewisohn who said that according to his researches for his forthcoming volume, he was told John was at the theatre that night in Wolverhampton.
The mirror shows someone wearing a suit and tie in it's reflection. I wonder if the other lads added signatures to these posters.
I can't find this photo anywhere legitimate. I used Google Lens, and it had 2 results. One on a site that went to an adblocker.info scam site. The other to a site in Russia. And the image printing pattern itself is not what I've seen on legit pics.
Does anyone know the original source of this photo?
I found it on X. I originally thought it may have been printed in a British newspaper local to Wolverhampton at some point.
Looking at the other photos in that twitter post, the pictures are credited to Leslie Bryce taking pictures for SeanO'Machoni. He was the editor of a magazine called "Beatles Book Monthly" and indeed, one of the photos appears in issue 6 (they are all up on the Internet Archive).
Judging from the text, the photo probably comes from one of the reprints he did from 1976 - 2003, which contained retropectives of the time as extra material. There are other pictures taken at the same time that have text refering to the magazine in the same style.
Unfortunately, that is where the trail goes cold. The Internet Archive does not have the reprints, just the orginals and I doubt the mag will have much extra context even if it did.
Lennon was probably just signing something the local organiser made up to sell (to VIPs maybe?) or to keep. Wouldn't be surprised to see that poster up on the wall at the venue today.
Thanks. They may have been competition prizes for some magazine. I imagine most ended up taped to bedroom walls and eventually thrown out. It was interesting seeing a photo of John signing a few posters as most items that come up for sale are autograph books. It was also interesting seeing him sign in black marker as most items were signed in biro at the time. With all the knowledge on this forum I thought there might be a chance somebody remembered one coming up for sale.
Good job, Mike! The Beatles Monthly was probably printed on uncoated stock, which explains the pattern if the pic was scanned or photographed from the magazine.
It looks like he had already finished signing that poster. Was he touching the pen to the poster in order to pose for the photo? It looks a bit odd because it appears as though he’s retracing over the last name portion.
Agree. It's curious as he appears to have already completed his signature and the pen is now resting on the other side.
