Hello, we would like to add some insight to Michael Jackson art and art in general. We have spent thousands of hours researching MJ and his art as well as consulted with many knowledgable people so we have some good insight into things. We would also like to clarify things. When we refer to the fact that Michael Jackson referenced art what we were trying to explain is that he as many artists do use something as a reference to create their artwork. Having the privilege to have seen many pieces of MJ art up close we have had the opportunity to look at things very closely and have done our own analysis using overlays and so forth on many pieces. Some are very close to the samples he used for reference and some are not. Meaning you can overlay some very closely and some you can see he was off more so in comparison to the reference he used to create the piece. Based on the information we have gathered MJ used references for most pieces he created including the pieces in his art studio. Again most artists use something to reference their works so this is common. If you do research you will see what we are explaining in more detail. When you overlay the reference images MJ used to create the art over the art pieces he created or vice versa you can clearly see how close in detail some are. There are different methods artists use to do this even on large scale pieces. You can do research this to better understand how artists can do this even on a large scale. If you look back in our earlier posts you will see that we posted a photo of the Martin Luther King Jr. art piece from MJs art studio. We also posted the reference photo MJ used to create that piece. We have analyzed that piece in detail and were able to take the reference image MJ used for the Martin Luther King Jr. art piece and layered it over the artwork piece he created. They matchup up in near exact detail. We also found another color image of the Martin Luther King Jr. artwork online which we attached here. We did the same overlays with the second image and had the same results. Now keep in mind this is a very large piece of art and any difference between the reference image should be magnified but when we did our analysis and overlaid the images they matched up nearly identical in every way.You can see how large the art piece is by looking at the photos of Oprah holding it. This is an analysis that anyone can do on their own with some knowledge of photoshop software. The best way to do this is by taking the reference photo image used for the Martin Luther King Jr. and making it transparent in photoshop software. Next layer the actual art piece underneath. Now line the eyes up and adjust until the face and so forth line up. You will see that they are nearly identical in every way when overlaid. We attached photos of the process we used. Based on the information we have gathered there are several methods artists use to recreate art in exact or close to exact detail as we explained earlier in this post. You can do your own research to get a clearer understanding. That said we understand that the general public has not had to opportunity to see much of his art so we understand people have questions and want to understand it better. As mentioned we've had the privilege to see his art up close and have done a lot of research on his pieces and art in general. Some pieces we have analyzed as mentioned line up well when layered against the reference photo he used and some do not. We would also like to mention that based on what we have seen MJ would create all kinds of art using different media and methods. He would create sketches, drawings, paintings even mixed media and used pencils, crayons, charcoal, paint, markers and so forth. We've had the privilege to see many types of his art in person. Some pieces are finished in fine detail while some are just simple sketches, drawings or unfinished pieces. Some are also more than likely practice pieces or pieces he did for fun. Keep in mind as many artists do MJ worked on becoming a good artist since childhood. He practiced very hard at this trying to become as good as he possibly could. In the process of becoming a good artist there will be some pieces created that are really well done and some that are not as detailed. We attached the reference photo MJ used for the Martin Luther King Jr. and the two photos we found of the Martin Lither King Jr. art MJ created. Anyone can find the same two images of the Martin Luther King Jr art MJ created by googling "Martin Luther King Jr Michael Jackson art" then looking under images in the search results. You can also google "Martin Luther King Jr." to find the exact photo image MJ used to reference the art piece. In the posts to follow you will see images in detail of the Martin Luther King Jr.. Here is the MJ art piece getting ready for the overlay. After the overlay fine adjustment are made by lining the eyes up first then you can adjust the facial features and so on to match. We have done the overlays both ways meaning we made the photo transparent and the actual art piece transparent to do various overlays.

I actually did this one myself the other night and the problem I have here, is that when you just show an over lap of the two, because the shadings are so similar, one becomes a part of the other and vice versa on the overlap.  So its hard to tell whats what with just an overlap (as compared to the other art you had).  Instead what I did with this one, was to lay one on top the other (with half transparency so I could adjust them to as close as each-other as possible--trust me I'm trying to look at this objectively) and then drag my transparency bar back and forth, and you will actually see where MJ had vast differences in his drawing on this one, vs the photo.  Just throwing them side by side without even overlapping you can see those differences with your eyes....

Mj had made his eyebrows quite a bit thinner (and much longer)

MJ made his mustache area much thicker (between nose and lips)

Top lip on MJ's drawing is not as thick as the photo.

His mouth is also actually closer to the crease in his chin on MJ's than in photo.

The hairline on the top isn't the same at all, and comes down much further onto his forehead.

His eye has shading on the left that does not exist on the photo (as well as other various lines that appear)

MJ closed MLKs mouth, where its actually slightly open on the photo.

And much more.  Those are just the ones my daughter and I spotted while dragging the slider back and forth.

These are all normal things I would expect one to see when you are drawing visually and trying to get exact... but because a person isn't a copy machine they obviously can't.

I also know there are different ways to get as close as possible to photos in drawing as well, as I mentioned I used to do drawings/paintings myself.  One way is to have a grid drawn onto the photo, and a grid on your paper, or a grid under your paper with light thru it so you can see the same grid on your paperwork/canvas.  This way you look at the photo and can map out where lines are drawn on the grid  (that's one of the best ways of getting really close and to have visually the same pic except for things like I mention above... and I expect that is the type of system MJ used at the art studio (hangar photos))---its what most artists do use when they want a "too specification" type drawing.

But the problem I really really have with the others is the hard lines of the actual photo are marked on the paper - without having the intricate details of the picture itself between those lines.  When your using a grid type system, you fill in as you go so you can see that things are looking where they should be.  To visually just slap hard lines down without having the other things one would not know if your hitting your mark correctly or not... even with a grid, and quite frankly the end result is a piece that does not look complete at all, like the adult Liz.

I think at this point we will just need to agree to disagree on this one.  Since I've implemented using grid systems myself for my own artwork, as well as just free hand drawing, I know what I can expect for my outcome.

BTW I did take Charlie Chaplin that you also had and did the same thing there---and again the exact same hard lines with an incomplete drawing that I wouldn't even sign - much less Michael who was a genius with a pencil...the only line I find off is a line on the pant leg.  (using markers is also pretty amusing.... since everyone who draws, even using a grid system needs to erase at times.... yet these are marker drawn--and exact to the photo.)

Lets move on for now.  There are more Erick things to uncover.
