Any and all Costello ca. late WW2 signatures I've seen that were supposed to be hand-signed, in person, have looked very similar to this check. So noting the date on the page as 1946, the Costello here is quite a departure from what I've seen, all of the Costellos I've seen have had a legible, full first and last name, even when they appeared to be rushed. Because of this, in my estimation, the Costello is suspect.
I recall Lou was said to have used secretaries even for checks.
The above example is a very representative example for his 1940s signatures on contracts and official documents, aside from checks and receipts.
Thanks for the study Scott - I recalled it backward, Lou did sign his checks.
The thing that got me was that he used to have his secretary write cards and letters to his uncles and aunts! Often when you find an ALS to someone's relative it is almost always a sure thing but not apparently with Lou!!! I have always wondered how all these checks got into the public domain thankfully they did. Greta Garbo's checks are about the only thing I would trust with her autograph!
Al Wittenbert did an excellent Lou Costello study on I think the UACC site or perhaps PSA. Actually I think it was Al who knew Costello's secretary and she said Lou insisted on always signing his own checks. She did do most of his personal correspondence and Christmas cards etc.
This is the study Al did :
Give 'em Hell, Harry! :)
