Wow.  I thought that I did alright but you guys are making me feel a lot better, Woody.  I appreciate your thoughts

Thanks James.  I feel good about my “consolation prize”.  I think that I will frame it in a way that mitigates the damage to the photo

I wouldn't conserve or restore it. Paper looks solid, as does the photo and ink. Leave well enough alone. Housed now in archival material, kept in a cool, relatively dark area, away from heat and harsh UV, incandescent, or sunlight, there won't be further deterioration noted on a quality piece like this, the material looks solid.

I agree completely, Woody.  Don’t mess with it.  As for the Lou Gehrig signed photo, yes, it’s very nice, and I know Lou Gehrig signed photos go for more than Ruth signed photos, only because the Gehrig photos are more scarce.  However, Babe Ruth is the pinnacle of all of American sports collecting, and I’d rather have the Ruth, personally.  Lou Gehrig is huge, but the Babe is king.

That’s a great photo.  Look at those boys, all enthralled with the Babe!  He loved helping kids.  It’s weird to think that all those young boys are now very old men or they’re still laughing with Babe in Heaven.

The Maris and Mantle photo

The Mantle looks good to me, but I don’t trust my eyes on Maris, but it’s a very nice piece.

I'm not a Maris guy, but it does look like a departure. Like an add on. Each successive letter's tilt is slightly different from the one before and after, which is strange for Maris. The R is a little different, as is the M and the perfect circle for the dot on the I, instead of a little "number 9". Mind you, the letters look OK, in and of themselves, but their interconnecting proportions look off, giving it a different look. Seems like done slowly, being copied, and that's what accounted for these successive letter proportions and tilt being slightly off from component to component. It probably is Maris, but I think that's what's throwing us off, I know it is me.

Spence gave it his ok as it comes with loa but that in itself gives me little piece of mind.  I hear what you are saying though

What are your thoughts on this signed copy of his autobiography? I think that it was published just months before his death.  Any guesses on value?  Book is in nice shape but dj needs help
