I struggle to find much consistency in MJ autographs. I have 3 authenticated signatures that are each very different from the other and this one just doesn't smell right to me. I gained this as a part of an autographed memorabilia lot that I purchased near Ft. Campbell, KY in 2010. Everything else from this lot has proven to be authentic.

The seller told me in 1996 his mother was shopping and happened upon a Space Jam movie promotion where Michael Jordan was signing and taking photos with fans at a shopping mall. She ducked into the first store and purchased this Space jam item (pencil pouch) because it was the only thing she could find for a Jordan signature.

I'm not trying to be a spoil sport but Moms always have the best intentions and I'm thinking she may have actually purchased a black marker on that same shopping trip.

What do you think?

I don't really like it. The first name is not too bad, but that J is kind of messed up in a couple of places.

Thank you James. I don't like the J or the last name (flat line) either

I'm not sure if I buy the free mall signing thing either. By 1996, he was already a legend and deal with Upper Deck was already in place.

Thanks for the input. I don't know if it was free or if there was a fee his mom had to pay for getting something signed. The seller never said one way or the other. He only said his mother surprised him with it and that he complained it wasn't something cool.

I don't know Jordan's signature at all...However, IF you are to buy the seller's story for a minute (let us pretend it is true) how would his mom in 1996 know what Jordan's signature would look like to even come close to forging it?

The rest of the lot was authenticated?

Good point Adam. Yes, the rest of the collection I bought from him was authenticated and sold over the last few years. Those signatures were very consistent. I haven't submitted this signature anywhere for authentication because it is so different from the other MJ signatures that I have and that I have researched. It will go back into my miscellaneous (mystery) box.

I don't know anything about Jordans but this seems like it is drawn versus written.  It looks slowly executed.  It looks shaky with the lines being a bit squiggly vs what one see's when someone is signing their name with confident speed.

I did look online just to familiarize myself with his signature some before answering, and found this site interesting.  There are two pages.  http://www.rareair23.com/jordanforgery101.html

The bottom loop of the J is very abnormal looking at authentic examples.

Just my two cents.
