That’s a machine signed Mickey Mantle forgery out of Florida.
I knew it looked like his signature!! This site saved me from a Judy Garland I came across the other day - the autopen picture that was *hand-signed*. Thanks!
Kim
That is the Judy Garland photo I almost purchased!! Luckily, I saw the autopen discussion here and did not. I wondered when they started using them. Thanks, Eric!
The Autopen was introduced in 1942. There were earlier devices. Earliest I have seen is 1944 - William Bendix if memory serves. I have read Truman was the first President to use one.
Most welcome. :)
Eric, where did you find that autopen?
Happy you asked, Kim! You probably can find a nice, real Mantle in the $200s unless they've gone up recently. That will probably be one not TPA authenticated, because that costs about $100 from most TPAs, but we have members that are extremely good on him. The odds of finding one cheap are low.
BTW, the one you posted is similar to the ones confiscated at the National Sports Convention in Cleveland in 2019, which later led to the arrest of Tony Podsada, the owner of the company that distributes them.
Is there a resource that you know of that shows examples of autopen signatures?
Kim, I wasn’t clear. This is not an autopen. It’s a forgery, and the forger uses a system that appears to be a computer and something like a plotter. It varies the signatures, sometimes ever so slightly.
autopens mimic an authentic signature. This is a pure forgery. the signature style is not authentic.
