Even though I have money in my PayPal account, PayPal will not let me send payments, at the moment, to anyone.  I have confirmed with several representatives that I have no restrictions on my account whatsoever (obviously, in reality I do).  All the reps so far have said that because it’s an issue with their security system, they are not able to override it.

This is what happens.  When I try to send a payment to my seller, the system says it needs a little more info from me...to make sure it’s me.  So a box appears with the last four digits of my phone number and they  what to send me a text message with a code to send back to PayPal.  So when I hit continue, the system says, “Sorry we weren’t able to identify you.”  But they never sent me a code!  This happens every time.  Even for a simple $10.99 purchase on eBay, the same thing happens!  Yet there are no restrictions on my account!

For the $10.99 payment on eBay, I was able to check out using my MasterCard debit card.  And, right now, I have much more in my PayPal account than on my debit card.

What I have come to determine by browsing PayPal community forums is that many other people have had this same problem, and it all goes back to my phone number I use with PayPal.  My phone, my one and only phone, is not listed in my name because I’m on a group plan with my sister, bro-in-law, and nephew.  Therefore, apparently the PayPal security system thinks I’m trying to pull a fast one and “steal” my money. The thing is...how did I get into the account (my account)?  Because I knew the password!  That’s why you have a password!  PayPal could also ask me security questions to which I would happily answer.

There are thousands of people on group plans where their phone is not in their name.  And apparently many people have had and are having this problem.  One person on the PP forum said they finally found a rep who knew how to circumvent this problem, and now they’re free!

Has anyone had this problem?  I definitely have gotten the run around by reps who don’t know the answer.  They have suggested that perhaps the person I’m trying to send money to has restrictions on his account and that that is the problem.  But that’s pure nonsense because it happens no matter what the amount is or to whom I’m sending the money.

I am now waiting on a PayPal debit card to help hopefully in some way.  Once I get paid within about 5 days , I will be able to make the payment I want and need to pay...with PayPal or not.  But this needs to be resolved.  I thought PayPal was supposed to be the simple and safe way to do business.  Apparently not.

Paypal is a pay-ne in the ass, as you are discovering.  Can you move money into your own bank account?  If so, then just transfer it all out, and use your debit card for the payments. Otherwise, you will have to work your way through as many reps as it takes to clear this up.  I had a strange "security" hold placed on my account several years ago, and it took time and determination to finally get it cleared up.  Best of luck.

Thanks for the advice, Gratefulphish.  Unfortunately, I no longer have a traditional bank account.  Of course, I had various bank accounts over the years, but I no longer do.  My primary source of income now is my social security which I receive monthly on a debit card, but it’s not possible to put money on the debit card.  So PayPal has temporarily put me in a bind which will be resolved in a few days one way or the other.  Once I get paid, I can at the very least use my MasterCard to make a payment.  Hopefully then, I can use a PayPal debit card to drain the money out of my PayPal.

After reading through some of the PAYPAL forums, these situations have been going on for many people dating back at least two years.  You would think PAYPAL would care more about its customers and realize this is a problem that needs fixing because, like I said, literally thousands of people are on a group plan with their phone which may not be in their name.

Thats a bummer, but cant say Ive ever experienced anything like that. My experience with Paypal has been quite spectacular - from the buyer protections to ease of use, etc. I love it.

Sorry to hear youre having an issue, but Im sure they’ll sort it out. These things happen from time to time.

Yeah, I’m confident it will get sorted out eventually, but in the mean time it ties me up as well as the very understanding and patient seller who is awaiting my payment.

I appreciate your kind thoughts though, dude.

I agree with Dude.  I have never had a problem with PayPal.  I hope that it all works out for you, James.  Best of luck.

Thank you, Mike.

UPDATE:  PayPal problem resolved!!  I was able to add my name to sister’s account, and PayPal is now working for me!!  Yeah!  As soon as I did that, it worked.  Easy solution actually.  Glad that’s over.  Thanks to everyone who offered their support.

Here in Denmark it was a problem to use paypal for me. I open ym account in 2010 and after two years of using it without any problems they froze my account after i deposited 1000 euros. They wanted copies of personal documents and identification. I emailed everything they needed and it still took almost 3 months to get my account to normal. in the 3 months i could not use my money i deposit. Then again in 2016 i travelled to Austria and used paypal to purchase an item for 40 euros and they froze my account again. That time it took almost a year to get it back. I still use paypal today but cant recommend them. i only use them becaues there is no other service like it?
