Here's a signed poster that I'm sure most of you guys have already seen.It was sold on rr a while back and more recently on iconic. The first picture is of the piece in its original untouched condition.the second picture is of the same piece with major restoration work to it.The owner was asking me if I was Interested in buying it.With that kind of work done to a piece such as this, should I totally pass on it.How much can this effect the value?

Talked to Jason earlier and this is what he said.I showed him all of Eric's pictures of the restored areas in question,he told me that he is the one who scanned the picture of the poster and it is a big poster so he could not scan the piece in its entirety. That is why the "p"in Paul and the loop in the "l" seem off and don't line up.same with the George in the other side.here are the new pictures of the areas sent to me today.Notice the loop in the"l" and the "P" in Paul is now ok.when he told me it was a scanning problem it hit me and I started to laugh and I explained to him this whole thing about the major alteration discussion when in reality it was nothing other than a scanning problem.
Here are the pictures.

Thanks, Paul. Have you decided what you're going to do?

Hi Paul,

Good! Best possible outcome -  imagery artifacts and not real alterations as the scans suggested. What was the explanation for the very low price?

Eric

tell him to use a camera with a better lense than on his cell phone

He also went on to say that the fuzzy line on the bottom right of Johns body that Eric pointed out was not changed in any way.He said it was nothing other than a printing and scanning problem.I then asked him why the doodles on Johns face was removed and he replied by saying that when you looked at the poster, you were drawn to it.Being that there was no proof in his opinion whatsoever that Paul or any other one of the boys did it,they decided to remove it.However ,he did say that John himself did things like that often, there was still not documented proof of any of this.

I then asked him why did they decide to restore,he told me that in its condition being a poster ,a restoration was the way to go.He said that the piece was an eyesore looking at the problem areas. Then saying that the resto was done beautifully and he reiterated that none of the signatures was touched or altered in any way.
Here is the description he emailed to me after our phone conversation.

Did you ask why he did not tell you up front about this, if I have this correctly?

Eric

I actually never asked him.apparently it was an in house piece that has been with then for a few years.
I thank all you guys for the advise.Eric I see all of you good points about restorations however now that we see in the new pics and Absolutly know that there was no tampering with any of the signatures,it's it a whole new ball game for me.Karl,I also agree with your analogy about the wine tasting. The general public wouldn't be so critical as some of us are here.
It is quite comical that this was nothing other than a scanning problem.

I have agreed to buy the poster. Its done.

May I be the first to congratulate you!

Eric

Thanks you Eric.I could deal with the paper loss issue.I was on the fee for a long time and now it's a nice addition to the family!!

Congratulations!

I like what Eric did, because there was really no way to tell if it was a scanning problem or an actual one. It's a good reminder to everyone, especially dealers, that images don't always tell the whole story.

This is similar to the 1969 set of Beatles autographs in another discussion here that looked like they had tape on them and had bled. It turned out that the tape was on the plastic it was in and that most if not all of the bleeding was from scanning through the plastic.
