Return envelope from the UK question: Adding UK stamps?

I need to send a self addressed stamped envelope to the UK, and I want to make sure I do it right before sending it off.

In the past, I just figured out the postage and added the right amount of stamps... but back then the UK stamps had the value in pence on them, so it was easy. Now, with the first class stamps without any value on them, it is not as clear.

Assuming the parcel will cost 4.75 pounds (475 pence), can I just use 8 first class stamps (assuming they are worth 62 pence each). The first class stamps will work for international mail to US?

Also, what is the best place to buy UK stamps? Is Royal mail the only option or is there somewhere in the US to get them?

Thanks for any assistance.

I don't know about the US Steve but to get stuff from the UK to New Zealand I spend 215 pence (2 pounds 15 pence) either by buying stamps for that amount or adding 3 first class and a 2nd class stamp or 4 1st class stamps. I've never had an issue and items almost always arrive quickly. I buy directly from Royal Mail and get them sent to a UK address and then on to NZ.
