Without linking the "Qualities on an Autograph" thread of the others such as Pete's super thread about common sense, I simply think this still has inherent value, with all the studio data and color, despite not being a lab photo. Sure as heck cost more.
Despite my often saying the a b/w photo will make a color signature more prominent I feel this particular b/w was so strong it was detracting from the Rip Torn and Bowie autographs. I feel the color image is a softer look, extra data/value aside, allowing the signatures to sing a bit more. What do you think?
I think I have to agree with Joe on this one. Perhaps it may be an optical illusion of the b/w being first, but, I think the cards pop right out with that. Having said that I have no artistic skill at all and you might be better off doing the opposite of whatever I think looks good lol. Just the way my eyes are seeing it perhaps but I think the color image is a bit too soft. The Bowie autograph is bold by itself I do not think the b/w image overpowers it. My eyes are drawn to the image first then immediate goes from Bowie then to Torn. I like the background although I think the right side with fewer "flashes" is better. It may be that I just like the looks of the b/w still because it looks like a throwback to the 1950s Sci-Fi era.
Just my personal thoughts. I think the b/w would work better. I think it's the background that is too busy. I'm a huge fan of b/w.
Well, after years of looking, I found the one I want (I REALLY want the final image of Tommy at the table with hat and gin and Stardust by Artie Shaw, but I give up at this point - it appears only in French so far). :) No idea for mat color/presentation, but this is the one. I don't expect to run into many 1976 signatures. This took 17 years. I don't know why why but you just don't see these stills. The mid 70's sigs are obviously extremely rare. Very happy! Hello again,
Actually, which do you like? B/W, color w/Rip Torn or the portrait shot? Thanks for your opinion. I wish this signature was on something (like this still...or the b/w), you know I like and only collect signed products like LP's or CD's or official promo photographs but...rarity. There are about three other serviceable images in this color lithograph 1976 press kit of eight images total (opening shot w/train for one, Tommy and Nathan Bryce sitting in the desert talking about where he might have come from is another), but they don't sing with the blue ink like these - the last especially. So, which do you like? I do like the b/w, or the other color with the two sigs as the pose suggests a conversation and movement. But, this last color portrait seems a classic image, and the World Enterprises logo there...and all that WATER and such a look of wanting.
You are right re background Joe - that was a stand-in. I should redo all and represent with black or grey mat.
