Obviously, what an any autograph is signed on has a big impact on its value. Given that Michael Jackson is one of the most iconic and popular figures in music history, his autograph will always be valuable. For a simple cut autograph of Michael Jackson, assuming it is bold and looks nice, I would say $400-$750. There's one being offered on eBay right now for $900 I believe. MJ signed albums typically go for over $1000. And signed copies, of "Bad" and "Thriller" go for the most. Last year, a signed copy of "Bad" sold on eBay for $3750!

I knew I felt as though I was undervaluing a Michael cut by starting at $400.

Well, the MJ cut I was referring for sale on eBay actually sold for $950 in February. That's in Paul McCartney's range and as it should be.

Anyone wanting to get a real MJ cut for $250...well good luck. If you ever do, that's a steal.

I saw two different 11x14 Jackson signed photos sell for $1999 each last year on eBay as well.

Genuine MJ signed photos can be found for under $600 and up. Autographs signed in a paperback romance novel would be among the least desirable of MJ autographs.

I completely agree that an MJ signed in an irrelevant romance novel would not be very desirable. Probably the best thing to do would be to take out the page it's signed on and then mount it with a photo. But I have seen several 8x10s go for about $1000 with a PSA/DNA LOA. And the piece I referred to that sold for $950 was on a piece of paper and it was a vintage signature.

One thing that hurts MJ values at times is the enormous number of forgeries. It is staggering the of fakes out there.

Authenticity aside, my main concern is the paper. If you have an old, mass-market paperback novel handy, open it up. I just opened one from 1990 and the pages were brownish yellow and many were aged to brown at the edges. 

Not only is the paper on a mass-market paperback usually dull and yellow when it's printed; it noticeably degrades over the years. The paper is so cheap and acidic, it starts noticeably degrading very soon.

Hardbacks generally have higher quality and brighter paper, and tend to degrade more slowly.

You make a good point Steve. My late mother read those "romance novel" pocketbooks by the boat load when I was a kid. So I know the paper quality could be an issue. To put it mildly it's cheap stock. 

But the  same lady also has a signed menu by Elvis Presley. So my initial interest was in the Elvis  item and then she started to rhyme off all the other autographs she had. When she mentioned MJ my ears perked up.

So I've made her a nice $$ for both items. I suggested she could put the money aside for the grandkids college education. No response yet...

Well I think the best and most direct answer I can give you wascher is because I don't have one...

She has told me her items (at least these two) are in a safety deposit box. Don't get me wrong I'd love to see them of course but the "discussions" about their purchase are still in the formative stages.

In short she is not sure she wants to sell so I have to convince her that she does.

Like I said in the opening sentence of my first post ...it's a longshot...wish me luck...

Even for experts on his autograph, I have to think it's darned near impossible to estimate a price on something without seeing what it is and assessing the quality, authenticity and desirability.
