Someone once asked me whose autograph should I collect as a long term hedge against inflation ???
I thought about it and answered this way;
100 years from whose name will still be remembered !
Albert Einstein,Thomas Edison,Bill Gates,the Presidents of the USA,Mother Teresa,Adolf Hitler even though many people oppose his legend,its part of History and should not be dismissed,Elvis Presley,Babe Ruth,Marilyn Monroe,Martin Luther King,Winston Churchill,Nelson Mandela,Muhammad Ali,Charles Darwin,Paul McCartney,Leonardi Da Vinci,Loiis Pasteur,Pablo Picasso,Vincent Van Gogh,Rosa Parks,Ludwig Beethoven,Dalai Lama,Walt Disney,Neil Armstrong,Malcom X,Jesse Owen,Ernest Hemingway,Henry Ford,Fidel Castro,Jacquiline Kennedy,Stephen Hawking,Clark Gable....The autographs of of lesser known movie stars and others are here in todays news and forgot tomorrow !
Please dont be discourged by what I say, if you like a particular person,be it an athlete, movie star or someone you admire...by all means collect them ,hang it on your wall if it pleases you but dont expect it to appreciate like the names mentioned above...Happy collecting and collect what pleases you !
That's a great list, Werner.
I'd add Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg. Obama, Steve Jobs and perhaps Steve Wozniak...just a few.
Thank you for the additions, also great names.
Charles Dickens -YES
Dylan ,Morrison,Lennon - 100 years from now ????
I dont know how many people will remember them, maybe I'm wrong, I've been wrong before !
The American society worshiped the big band era musicians and band leaders of the 1930s and 1940s like Harry James,Duke Ellington,Tommy Dorsey,Count Basie,Woody Herman,Cab Calloway,Stan Kenton,Lionel Hampton, and many many more. And every person living in the USA at that era could name them all.......NOW go out and ask any Generation Z (someone born after generation Millennials) if they recognize any of the above named Big Band names and I guarantee you they cant name ONE !
And thats only 80 years that have passed !
So you still think Dylan,Morrison and the like will be remembered 100 years from now ????
Just my thoughts and life experiences....NOT to be taken too serious !
I see your point, but do not agree. Once Rock N Roll came out in the 1950s, the younger generations only cared about that, and big band era was forgotten. But with Rock fans, you have teenagers even today that are wearing Beatles shirts, and listen to their music. I'm 41, and my music was the Grunge era, and still is my favorite. But I also am a very big fan of Classic rock, as I know if it wasn't for those bands, my bands would'nt be around. I also respect the hell out of the Crooners- Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra, Paul Anka, and the rest. I wouldn't say I will listen to their stuff ever, but have a true respect for their work. I would love a Sinatra autograph in my collection.
Rock fans I feel will always be around, and they will know of Beatles, Dylan, Who, Doors, Floyd, Led Zepp, & etc. Even if it is a respect factor of knowing they influenced what music they are listening too.
Big band is a form of music that kind of ended, so I feel it is different. You don't have people releasing Big Band music to the masses, but you do still have Rock bands making music.
Interesting point of view...I respect your opinion even if I disagree.
Try asking someone 20 yrs old who Dylan, the Who, the Doors, Floyd, Led Zepp, & etc.are and I will bet very few if any know who they are....Hey when Jay Leno did Jay walking half the people didnt know who the President or Vice President of the USA are...one question asked was : What was the Civil War fought over...the answers were hysterical...Go to youtube and type Jaywalking and see how ignorant most people today are Re/History or common sense knowledge.
Its too bad knowledge is wasted on the old !
Seen many Jaywalking skits, and Howard Stern has been doing the same skits for years..... Many ignorant people out there for sure. But if you are going to bring up Jaywalking as the example, then NO ONE you mentioned such as Charles Dickens will be remembered.
There will always be ignorant people in the world, but a rock fan/ music fan, I feel will always now who the Beatles are. It is nearly 60 years since they started, and their albums/ songs are still top sellers on streaming music services. Yes, some are Old Time fans, but many of the streaming service purchases have to be coming from younger fans in their teens and 20s.
