Andy Rooney Retires -- and talks autographs!

I remember around 1992, doing a bit on the radio where we promised listeners concert tickets if they gave us phone numbers to a celebrity they might know, and we call them and they get on the air.

A lot of Padres and Chargers players, as we were in San Diego. One person called w/ Andy Rooney's digits. We called him, and were shocked he answered. He sounded grumpier than the old man in UP, and barked at us "What do you want?" It was a Monday, and we said "We missed what you ranted about yesterday, what was the topic?"

He screamed "I'm not gonna sit here and repeat it over the phone for you." He hung up. We called back, he didn't answer. And a listener got tickets.

Well, I didn't see the segment 60 Minutes did last night, but my friend told me at racquetball, that he said he rarely signed autographs. He didn't see the point, and often told autograph hounds "I get paid to write!!!"

He ended his segment apologizing to people he made angry, and said something like "Just let me eat my dinner in a restaurant."

Wow. DOesn't get worse than that.
