Many autograph and book collectors love to sift through the shelves at used bookstores or thrift stores for signed copies that go unnoticed. Books signed by athletes, celebrities, and even Presidents have been found for less than $1. Others have found a signed photo, hat, or even a poster on a random shelf.
Yesterday, a user that goes by Straydowg on Reddit's r/autographs scored the find of a lifetime at a Goodwill store in Indianapolis, IN. Thrown on a shelf in a cheap frame with a photo, and a quote was an Edison Bontanic Research Corporation with the distinct signature of American icon and famed inventor, Thomas Edison. The price? $19.99. He wasn't sure if it was real or a copy, but he took a shot on the hopes he struck gold.
Once he got home he took pics and asked users for their opinions on if the autograph was real. Several users quickly chimed in to confirm that it was indeed real and matched with examples of checks they own. Auction results show that similar checks have sold between $600-$3400. Score!
I enjoy hearing experiences like this. I need to go thrift shopping once in awhile!
Great find. I'm envious.
The only autograph I ever found at a thrift shop was a Debbie Gibson preprint. Sad! :-(
