To Personalize or Not to Personalize

Greetings!

My second blog post and to think I never thought I'd write even one, but I did and really enjoyed it too.

I stated in my first blog that I was just getting back into collecting autographs after about 8 years.  During my first round of collecting, which lasted about 2 years, I focused on obtaining autographs for my wife who was turning the big 40.  To this day I believe the reason why I ws able to obtain ove 250 autographs was the fact that I asked each celebrity to "personalize" them to my wife.  I also think many of the stars had experienced turning 40 too, so they may have felt more inclined to sign.  In any event, the letter I wrote, the request for "personalization" seemed to work.

Now, 8 years later I'm starting it all up again to obtain autographs for my wifes big 50, which is still 2 years away.  My delima is this, should I request that they be personalized again?  A big part of me says yes, after all it worked once right?  The other part of me says should I just request a signature, period?  I have a feeling those that are not personalized are probably worth a lot more; however, should I really care?

Some of the questions running through my mind include:

1.  What does my wife think,  after all they are her's (I keep forgetting that).

2.  Would we really sell any of them?

3.  Who will we pass these autographs onto, children, grandchildren, charity,  etc.

One of the main reasons why I signed up for this site is to seek advise and help in autograph collecting.  Its amazing to me just how excited I am, getting back into this again.  It brings back a lot of great memories of collecting them 8 years ago and seeing the smile of my wifes face as she turned the pages of autographs in amazement.

So, while I haven't made up my mind if I should have them personalized or not, I sure am open to opinions on this one.

Go Bruins!  Regards, Gary

I would continue asking for personalizations. Of course they are less desired in the market but that's not the reason why most collect. When requesting signatures TTM, I always ask that it be personalized. I've even gone to the extent of explaining that the item will never be sold and if it's got an inscription then the celebrity knows you are a collector not a dealer.

Mike,

Great feedback, I appreciate the tip on telling them that it will never be sold too.
