I love classic rock. And, I'd love nothing more than an Electric Warrior album signed by Marc Bolan of T-Rex. Of course, you'd need to use a silver or gold paint pen, as the alum is mostly black (and also raise him from the dead...yeah, typical rock star movie; died in a car crash).
I guess us autograph collectors would rather have that than a fossilized Tyrannosaurus rex. Maybe that's because Bonhams & Butterfields had a starting bid in the millions!
They were hoping it would go for over $6 mil. But the bones, excavated in South Dakota in 1992, only got up to $3.7 million (it is a tough time economically, ya know).
For some reason, the auction was going down at the Venetian hotel-casino in Las Vegas.
I'm guessing the autograph collecting crowd would also pass up on the new Montblanc pen. Sure, that's a great name in the pen world. But we'll stick with our Sharpies, thank you very much. Especially when the limited-edition pen commemorating Mohandas Gandhi's 140th birthday (wow...he's exactly 100 years older than me)...it's selling for $23,000! Now, change that comma to a decimel point, and maybe I'd pick one up.
Part of the backlash the company is getting is that the $23,000 price tag is what many poor people in India make in their entire lifetimes.
As of this writing, no pens have been sold. But guessing there might be some backlash, Montblanc donated $145,666 to the Manhatma Gandhi Foundation (they should've also donated a few pens!)
