Dodger manager Joe Torre was on Jay Leno, answering the 10 questions. That's a new bit Leno does, where a celebrity answers 10 questions remotely. It's usually a big name (he's had Tom Cruise, Cameron Diaz, and Mel Gibson all do this bit). And some of the questions are goofier and more fun than the questions you hear in the studio.
He asked Torre the weirdest prank he was ever involved in. Torre said his first year in baseball, this manager used to give a brand new baseball to the man that worked the elevator at hotels. He'd say "You can get my players to autograph this for yourself." He thought that was a nice gesture, until he realized that he was giving the ball to the operator that came on at midnight, and this allowed him to see which players were coming back tot he hotel passed curfew.
But the joke was on him, as many of the players were signing different players names.
Autographs came up later, when Leno asked the weirdest place he was recognized and asked for an autograph. Torre said he was at a Broadway show, and he was coming out of the restroom when someone came over with a life-sized poster of him to sign. He said he signed it, but was shocked. He wished he would've asked the guy if he just walks around carrying this poster of him.
I'm not sure he realizes, the hardcore autograph dealers, pay the people at clubs, airports, restaurants...and they get the phone call when a celebrity is there. This gives them time to pick an item from their home (baseball, headshot, magazine cover, index card)...and show up at the venue. It doesn't mean the person was just sitting in row 38 with his Yankees poster, and lucky for him, in walks a player!
