Some interest auction notes recently…
With Michael Jackson dying, the auction that happened before his death, certainly didn’t get the numbers the items did afterwards.
On the anniversary of his death, the crystal studded glove he wore on his Victory Tour in the mid 80s, went for almost $200,000, at Julien’s Auctions. That was 10 times it’s estimated value.
Wanda Kelley was the “lucky” winner (rumor has it, she was prepared to go a lot higher for the glove, too). She also walked away with a number of albums the auction was selling.
Apparently loafers aren’t as valuable. Even if he moon-walked in them. They went for $90,000.
A fedora went for over $55,000. And, for you autograph nuts – one of the last autographs Jackson signed and dated (June 24, 2009), went for $21,000.
A custom jacket the king of pop wore during an interview with Barbara Walters (no word on if it had any tear stains), sold for $120,000 (it was expected to fetch about $7,000).
I’m still waiting for one of his noses to hit the auction block. I’ll pay big bucks for that.
A friend of mine owns a few Jimi Hendrix guitars, and I sent him an email that a Jimi Hendrix Fender in the auction went for almost $200,000 (I believe my friend wants $500,000 for his axes).
Hendrix wanna be Prince (or, “The Artist Formerly Known as The Artist Formerly Known as Prince”) had handwritten lyrics that fetched $66,000.
A shirt the real King in music – Elvis Presley – wore on the Milton Berle Show in the mid-50s, garnered $61,000 (I’m guessing if they ever come up wit ha Berle shirt, it’ll only grab a few hundred! Now…a pair of his underwear…)
Now, what blew me away about the other weekend auction going on with Julien’s Live, was an X-ray of Marilyn Monroe’s from a 1954 visit to Cedars of Lebanon Hospital. They thought it would get a thousand bucks. Nope. It sold for a record $45,000.
Now, the San Diego Hall of Champions has an X-ray of the broken jaw Muhammid Ali got from former Camp Pendleton Marine and heavyweight champ Ken Norton. That’s an X-ray I want!
Now, an item Monroe’s cute ass sat on…a chair from her last photo shoot, sold for $35,000.
A Cher gown (Bob Mackie designed), from her Cher Show, got over $25,000.
A Superman costume the late Christopher Reeves wore flew off the shelf at $32,500.
And someone was king of the auction world, getting Kate Winslets earrings from Titanic. They went for $25,000. More than twice that price went for a dress Audrey Hepburn wore in Funny Face.
And movie critic Roger Ebert often says how bizarre it is that Mia Farrow could’ve been married to Frank Sinatra, and then move on to Woody Allen. That’s off topic, but…Sinatra gave Farrow an 18K gold cigarette case (is there a classier gift to give a gal?). It went for $16,250.
I’m saving my money for the flask he probably gave Dean Martin as a gift!
