Something like this, is it worth it to get it authenticated before selling? I say yes, wife says no. They belong to her, but I'm dealing with them.
Thank you for your time.
Depends on how you are going to sell them. Directly? Consignment? I believe that genuine autographs sell themselves. Depends on how much you are wanting to sell them for. If you are wanting top dollar you will need to get them authenticated if you are selling them direct. I believe it's not worth the upfront cost if you are flexible in your pricing and willing to accept a little less for a faster sale.
I was planning on using eBay. I've been selling there for 20 years, mostly Porsche stuff. If you ever need anything Porsche authenticated, that I can do:-)
I firmly believe that quality authentic autographs will sell for a reasonable price without third party authentication. Unless you have something quite rare, I don't believe it would be worth the overall cost. Just my two cents worth.
I agree w/Joe.
Hello,
There is also a Buy/Sell/Trade Forum right here you might try first - you'd save some fees etc at least and not everyone will be so certificate-needy.
Thank you both for your time and insight, and I had not seen the buy/sell/trade. I found this thread in a Google search, bookmarked it.
This is becoming a fun learning experience. In addition to the 100 or so binders, there were what we guessed to be 12K books, maybe 1/3 signed, going by sample, 400 prints, and a 10 x 20' storage unit of other things. Plus a garage. Among the other things are three boxes of baseballs, most loose, I'll be posting those with the baseball guys. Funny thing is the first one I took out was Ronald Reagan. The next 10 I went 0-10 in trying to figure out who they were, gave up.
We'd have our unborn grandchildren selling the books and prints if we didn't sell as lots, so we did. I didn't want to do that with the autographs, I thought it would be fun and probably much better financially if we tried it ourselves. So here I am:-)
It sounds like a mammoth challenge. You have come to the right place to seek good advice on authenticity. If you decide to start listing your autographs on eBay place give us a link to your items.
I will be glad to help you on vintage Hollywood signatures whenever possible.
