Gottahaveitrockandroll.com is having an auction with the Allman Brothers lot (below). It's date 2009 which makes me suspicious of the Dickie Betts signature as he was removed from the band in 2000, and later sued the Allman Brothers- I think there is still alot of bad blood making it unlikely he would sign...  any thoughts?

I don't think I've heard of this place before. They have a lot of stuff up for auction. Does anyone know if this place is legit?
I do know Frank Caiazzo looks at (or at least used to) their Beatles items, so you should be golden there if looking for anything Fab.

I know them. Gotta Have It is definitely a legit company, but Pet is right: it's always smart to get an independent expert opinion on anything you buy at auction, particularly if it doesn't come with rock solid independent authentication. Most auctions do not offer lifetime guarantees of authenticity. Many if not most sell items as-is, even though they try hard to only sell authentic material.

Do you homework before you bid, because you likely own it no matter what afterwards. And always read the terms of the sale carefully.

If you have concerns about the Ramones guitar, contact them and let them know.
I don't have time to check right now, but I don't know Ramones anyway. I'll leave it to you rock hounds.

I think it's significant that a company - in any field - responds promptly to inquiries and takes them seriously.  It strikes me as a fairly good indicator of a company's legitimacy.

I think we all know of companies that simply would not respond.

Or, if they did, would defend the product without any investigation.

good personal research-.  I like how you compared 2 sigs of the same person in the same auction to start developing an opinion. Good and easy detective work, huh?

Good eye Mike. The Ramones guitar looks horrible - as does the Stones. I can't tell on the Cream because the photograph is so blurry, but it doesn't look too good either - even under a dust cloud of pixels. All others - thumbs up! In fact that signed silver Springsteen game used would get a center piece spot in the Altmann collection!

If you contacted them I'm sure their answer, or anyone else running an auction house will thank you for you concerns, then contnue to run it. I've seen it happen over and over and over and over for nearly 30 years now. Best thing to do is not bid on it and let the company deal with the repercussions from the customer. In a nut shell - none of them really care.

And...fyi for those interested Joey switched to the signature you are referring to around 85 or 86 until his death in 01. His earlier signature style was fairly consistent, but looks completely different than the modern style. Dee Dee's signature varied a bit and was reasonably legible up until the Dee Dee King era. Both Johnny & Tommy pretty much stayed the same, only the slightest of changes due to maturity. As for the members that followed the original lineup, I know what they look like, but am no expert in the matter. There were really only 4 Ramones in my opinion. Gabba Gabbagraph!!

Don't rely on any auction house as fair authenticators-they rely too much on getting this stuff to make money to be impartial. If you have a guy like Frank Ciazzo, who spends a career on one group of 5 signatures, thats acceptable - but a lot of musicians don't have a frank, so the auctions houses try to be an authenticator of authority but fail miserably for the most part.  Buying from them means you have to do your own research to be confident.

Even if they have a money back guarantee if items is fake ( most don't) they way make it hell for you to prove forgery

It seems for a debate this long about Allman Bros, it should be a Duanne Allman signature we're talking about ;-)
agreed
