I can't say I ever saw a post on this site about Jimmy being secretarial. If there's been discussions and I've missed it please disregard or feel free to add to this one.

I've seen suggestions over the years that he uses a secretary. The only potential proof I've noticed is his in person book signing autographs are pretty different than ttms but I've always chalked this up to him signing a lot at one time versus being able to sit down and sign at his convenience. The only other suspicion is that he seems to have been the easiest of presidents to obtain ttm aside from Gerald Ford. I chalk this up to him being a very generous man in the way he lives his life. So there's each side real v. fake is outweighed in my theory. Also many non book or photo items are also sent back unsigned.

Just a few minutes ago I was on a facebook site for a guy who has the largest collection of political signed baseballs and in one of his post he posted, which is most likely an authentic Jimmy signed book plate. It is signed more deliberately than his book signing sigs but more of an appearance close to those than the normal ttms.

I decided to check out my signed book collection and noticed a drastic difference in the ones that are authored and signed just by him versus the one authored and signed by he and his wife. The one with both of them more closely resembles the book signing signatures though it is a more neatly written and the C is formed better. The ones just signed by him TTM which are personalized in a similar way look to be in a different handwriting entirely.

I am not the best at posting photos here but will either be glad to try or if a more knowledgeable photo poster could help I could send a few photos for them to post. For now, I am just trying to see what you guys think or what you may have heard. To me, this is leaning more towards a Charlton Heston situation, I hope I'm wrong but it looks pretty doubtful to me.

Hi Jason,

In my opinion both these signatures are genuine. By the hand of both Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter

The Jimmy signature is a little tired. But I think that's probably due to signing multiple books etc at the time.

Your pictures are fine by the way.

Mark

Thank you Mark. It's possible they look so different because one signed in thin sharpie and others are in ink pen. The spacing and style seems pretty similar but for some reason it just stuck out to me more.

Hi Jason,

No problem glad to provide you with my opinion.

Forgot to add that the personal inscription is also by the hand of Jimmy Carter.

The former president was/is very approachable for signatures etc. My friend obtained for me a signed index card by him along with George H Bush, Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford at the opening of the Ronald Reagan library and museum back in I think 1991. He was more than happy to oblige.

I also have a few signed pictures by him in storage that I obtained during the 80's/90's.

Hope you can obtain it at a reasonable price.

Regards,

Mark

Thanks, I know he is pretty great. He used to (may still do, I'm not sure since covid happened) do photo ops for every attendee at his church who wished to get one. If I was still into meet and greets I would have loved to go to get my photo taken with him.

I had a book signing style signed book that I bought at goodwill many years ago but wound up selling that for about $20 on ebay. I regret selling it considering how low it went but I know his autograph is pretty common. I did find a Bill Clinton signed book at the Value Village and sold that for $135 so I guess it evened out.

Hi Jason,

I was unable to post a couple of examples as the site was down when I posted above.

Here are a couple of examples. The notable difference is the forward slant of the 'r' in Carter.

Don't worry your example is fine. Besides by the time of the signing of that book Miss Clough was no longer working for Carter.

Mark

Hi Jason,

As far as I know from my brief look into secretarial signing on or for President Carter I only found one secretary by the name of Susan Clough who performed this task with a high level of accuracy.

Regards,

Mark

Thank you for letting me know. When did she work for him?

I got these around 2004-2009

Hi Jason,

Miss Clough began working for Carter back in 1971.

After he was elected president in 1976 she became his personal secretary and assistant during his one-term.

After Carter left office (January 20th) 1981she remained his personal assistant for a few years then left. I believe she left his employment around 1983. The website is down again but I did read the full article.

As your book was published in 1987 its fair to assume that the dedication was for a special book signing or later. As far as I know Miss Clough had no further contact or dealing with Carter.

So your book is in my opinion authentic hand signed by both Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter.

Regards,

Mark

Thank you Mark. All my books were signed from 2004 and on. The older one (Why Not The Best) I actually got for free as I was a library employee and we got to keep a few books here and there. Everything else was purchased from Barnes and Nobel and sent through mail around 2005-2009.
