Ernest Hemingway Signature (on Old Man and the Sea 1st Edition)
Hello all,
A few weeks ago, a 1st edition of The Old Man and the Sea with a signed inscription from Ernest Hemingway sold on E-bay for just north of $4,000 USD, which is way under the usual 20 grand or so it would go for.
An unsigned copy in very good condition usually goes for between $1500 - 2000. I am wondering if this is a classic case of trying to ring a couple extra grand out of a phoney signature?
It looks way off to me (especially the "E" in Ernest) but would appreciate any further input from anyone with Hemingway knowledge. I don't have too many examples of his sig after the 2 plane crashes he was in, but I hear it changed / I am also not sure when this was signed and there was no indication on the item description.
I reckon the purchaser either got the deal of a lifetime or was swindled.
