Douglas Fairbanks question

This one makes me feel like a rookie! I am trying to figure out if this is a stamped or live ink. I've had this photo for a number of years and I've always thought it was a stamped signature. It's a double weight photo with the photographer's mark. The back of the photo has a written date of Sept. 1917. I've seen preprinted examples of this photo although all are white signatures(see bottom photo). Could this be live ink even though it has a stamp like appearance?

There is a lot of his herringbone jacket peeking through the signature. Have you looked with a high powered loupe? Once I had the same problem with the same sort of jacket. I had to scan it so a stroke was several inches wide.

It's definitely above the herringbone jacket. The signature is not a part of the photo. If it was stamped it was well done. There are a few very tiny bubbles in the signature(maybe two or three). I usually can spot a stamp but there are some variances I usually don't see in a stamp.

I'm hoping someone can find or has seen another stamped example like this on this photo. I could not.

I did not mean it was in the photo - I was saying what might look like bubbles are the herringbone far as I could see. I also looked for a match but could not find one. It is frustrating I am sure as you have it in hand! My guess is a stamp - very even ink apllication overall and no dedication FWIW. On the other hand, would a stamp be applied at his natural signing angle?

Why not apply a stamp in his usual signing angle? A stamp is used to make it look authentic and therefore his natural angle might be useful as well. The even and weak ink application makes me believe in a stamp, although I can't strengthen this believe by examples of his stamp. Nevertheless I wouldn't trust in it enough for my collection.
