Hello,

I obtained three signed Hemingway books from the same collection and am trying to determine if they are legitimate.  Any opinions or direction on who I should send them to would be appreciated.

Thanks,

CJ

I was speaking to the novice collectors, and I don't think that is you.

Eddy, we have been getting along fine for some months, lets keep it that way :-)

Hello gents,

I saw you where doing some sleuthing on that other signature.  I thought I would upload some higher res photos of my fakes.  As far as by ebay saga, I didn't capitulate on being blackmailed for the refund of the first book and left the seller negative feedback. That will just be a $700 lesson.  I didn't state the signatures where faked but stated the results from the Beckett initial review.  I included to photos of the sources you provided so buyers could decide for themselves.  Unfortunately, I included photos from the first book on one of the feedbacks and the seller was successful in having my narrative removed due to unrelated content.  I thought it was a risk, but that is the signature that was identified in the RR auction and thought it was worth a try since I can't change the positive feedback from that purchase.  I called ebay about the whole debacle and they are looking into it.  As I told them, I'm just trying to keep other people from becoming victims.  Several of the positive feedbacks state the book wasn't signed by the author but they gave positive feedback because he refunded the purchase.  This is of course his modus operandi.  Refund 1 in every 5 and you have a good business.  The value of most of the books without a signature isn't worth the shipping cost.

Hello again,

Thank you for those images. Clear and helpful. :-)

I hope eBay does good by you. This seller is a serious problem. You are correct - an unsigned  1st Edition of The Old Man and the Sea is about $500-$600!  Good luck in your quest! These updates are much appreciated. Not everyone follows up, especially after bad news. So, thank you.

Hello,

I'm back for some more advice.  In order to convince the credit card company the first book's signature is fake, it will have to be reviewed by a credible authentication service and I have 15 days to do it.  The first review was by Beckett.  Any suggestions?

Thanks,

CJ

Who do they think is credible?

From my conversation they expect the authentication service to make their case for being accepted across the industry.

I would go with anyone who is considered reputable in the industry.  I expect it will be an easy determination.  It will have to be expedited to meet the inquiry deadline and that adds cost, but I would pay the full amount of the book, just so he doesn't get it.

As  asked, that question doesn't appear have an answer.

They can't name a service? That sounds ridiculous. How are you supposed to fill that request?

Before or after the opinion is rendered? This gets $ quick. Perhaps that is the point?

CJ -  If I'm understanding correctly, the credit card company is requiring "proof" that a potential third party authenticator is recognized/accepted in the industry for their authentication work?  After that hurdle is cleared, only then will the credit company consider accepting the opinion of that authenticator?

Since you bought these on eBay, perhaps this link would be helpful:
