From first glance, they looked OK but I'm no expert. If its a forgery, its a fairly good one. Just because they're signed in the same pen is proof of nothing but my opinion on this image is that to me, it looks OK. However, if you're not sure, there are steps you can take to authenticate it and if its a forgery, you can get your money back. Either way, you win.
I'd like to hear anyone's opinion on this. Mike, your "one pen" observation has me thinking about something I've always wondered about. My in person experiences are much different from yours. I've only collected at conventions and at paid or won meet and greets for bands. In those cases, I'd always bring my own marker and ask them to use it. This would ensure that the marker would be bold because I checked it first or primed it if it was a paint pen. For the Metallica meet and greet, they all signed using the same marker. They came one at a time, maybe 10 minutes apart, and they each had the same assistant. The assistant gave them the same marker each time someone passed through.
So my question for you is this: at premieres and other events where there may be signing, how does the celeb get the marker in the first place? As I ask this, I imagine the answer is that it's different each time. But I guess I wonder, to the event facilities have handlers/helpers to give markers as each person comes out, do autograph collectors give them a marker, do they have markers on their own before they show up or come out?
And with that said, is it possible that on my double signed photo, they just happened to have a bold blue marker at two different events? Blue Sharpie is pretty common for autographing. That still doesn't explain some of your concerns about Spielberg, though. Should I try to PSA it? I don't really trust them to know what they're doing anyways. Would anyone else care to chime in on this one?
I collect in person all the time. For a couple of years, I did it everyday. I always carry the same pen. When that one runs out, I buy another of the same pen. I usually carry a black one, because for some reason, some celebs will not sign with a blue one because they think it is a "dealers" pen. That said, sometimes in a crowd, the celeb will sign everyone with the first pen someone hands them. It could be blue and I recently got one at Orion in red, because that was the pen that Jerricho had in his hand. I did Pat Benatar two weeks ago and Giradlo grabbed my pen on stage and I didn't get it back until they were done signing for everyone. I just happened to hand it to him first. So despite my carrying the same black pen everywhere (except for Silver on dark items), I have blue, black, red, green, silver and gold. Most black but sometimes they grab another one first and quite frankly, I don't care what color it gets handed back to me in, as long as it is signed. I am just happy to get it.
Nice piece Harry. I was just sharing experiences. Sometimes I get a piece like the Hathaway today, that I wouldn't care if it was crayon. Well... of course I would, but you get the idea. That actually supports Mike's point. Because even though I always carry the same exact pen, my signatures are all over the map in pen color and boldness. Unless you get a cast or multi signed piece all at the same time or fairly close, you will get some differences.
Steve, what are your thoughts on the example in question?
I'm not comfortable with it, but modern autographs can be really tough unless you're out there yourself seeing what the habits are. The T isn't fat and triangular like most are. The S of Steven is too top-heavy. Neither autograph looks like it was signed quickly (no tapering where the writing stops). And both names are at the same angle and look like they could have been signed by the same person.
Okay, so the seller was great about this and I'm sending it back. Now I need to search for one I'm comfortable with. And I'd like your opinions in my new search. What do you think of THIS double-signed photo?
Or, for these two, am I better off just looking for two really good single photos? In that case, are these two examples good?
In some ways, Lucas is just too easy to forge; Also I'm uncomfortable authenticating Spielberg because I haven't seen many. Therefore, I'd really like to hear what you have to say. Especially Mike! Thanks!
I like the solo Spielberg best...it's a classic signature. I don't know Lucas well enough to comment on these.
Thank you, Steve and Mike. In that case, I might go for the two solo shots. I like the signatures better and I think they're both better shots of each director at their peak.
Final question on this solo Spielberg before I pull the trigger. Are you guys okay with the "t" in this one? It's fatter and it's not as pointed and triangular at the top. I know I've seen others in this form, but it's not very common. The rest of it looks very common to me. Is that "t" okay?
