Opinion on mailing (snail mail) celebrities for autographs?

I just sent Mel Brooks a letter last week upon recommendation from a friend on here. I wanted to know if anybody has sent out fan mail and had success. It seems like something that requires quite a bit of patience. Even more so if you finally get a reply and it's a secretarial or auto-pen. There are a few people I'd like to send a letter to, one being Jackie Chan.

Here's an example of a picture somebody sent him and got back signed.

This is the main page for Jackie Chan fan mail.

Some of these stories I read on this site seem too good to be true, so I'd like some opinions.

fanbiz.com is a good forum for keeping track of feedback also many of the people there report if things are secs, autopenned ect so you can save your stamps

I do TTM mailing all the tiem and have really good success. I find that if the artist litsts an address on their webstie whether that be direct to them or managment, thats a really good bet that you will get a reply. I also have great success emailing if their is an email address where the person of interest says you can write them or management. I would recommend the website startiger, where i am a member of. It is far better than fanbiz in my opinion. They have many more addresses and the administrator does a pretty good job of keeping up with requests. Jackie Chan has several good addresses on their and i dont think hes that difficult to get TTM. I have never heard anything about autopen or sec for him. Sometimes it does take a while to get a response but thats just the way it goes. But mailing works really well for certian people. A good rule of thumb is that if you want a really big star and look at their addresses and see an address for studio fan mail and their are several others as well, your gonna get a preprint or sec. They are notorious for that. The really big actors like brad pitt, angelina, aniston, hugh jackman, and many others are mostly always sec or preprint. The good thing about a site like startiger is that you can look at the gallery under a certian person and immediately see what the likely response is and if its worth your stamp. Hope this helps

People have success with it, but often times what they get back is secretarial. There are celebrities out there who genuinely do sign their mail requests, though. It looks like you got a good answer about the actual celeb in question from Mike.

Hi everyone. It's been a while since I poster on here, so I thought that I would give an update. A little over a month into doing fan mail and I've received 3 responses so far! Eric McCormack, Joe Dante, and John Landis have all responded to my letters. Eric McCormack sent back a personalized headshot. Joe Dante signed all the pics I sent him and also included a personalized headshot of his own. John Landis also sent back a personalized headshot. This has been fantastic so far, and I can't wait to see who else responds! I wholeheartedly recommend Startiger.com for info on doing this.

Years ago I wrote to George Lucas and Ralph McQuarrie.  A list of addresses was supplied in Star Wars Insider magazine.  Lucas’ people sent a package with a form letter apologizing for how busy George was and how impossible it would be for him to honor every request.  Ralph McQuarrie, however, sent a handwritten letter on Star Wars letterhead apologizing for not being able to draw a sketch.  “It would set an impossible precident for numerous follow up requests you see-“  Notice the spelling error.  Needless to say, I liked Ralph’s apology letter much better than George’s.
