I dunno... if I was conspiracy minded I'd think they intentionally use weak pens so you'd have to buy another one in 5 years. Planned obsolescence. LOL ;-)
I was actually thinking the same thing Zipper!
I believe its a combination, because if I recall correctly, his admission happened just before he started coaching for the cardinals. as with anything else, supply and demand dictate, and when he started signing on the sweet spot again, it devalued the older balls.
but to a true collector, as many on here are, vintage signatures typically hold their value.
in the case of this ball, the 80 dollars was significantly below market. it was not authenticated, and I got if for a steal.
I agree the 90s era is the best for investment purposes like you said; some like it for the way the signature looks like you said you do, but some like it for the fact that he won't be signing that way. All the vintage signatures of Mantle, DiMaggio, etc etc sell for more than the modern day ones. Same trend will probably occur with Jeter.
I believe that Jeter's price will remain the same, maybe drop a little but I don't think it will fall too far below what we see today. And yes, knowing the signature you are buying is always a plus. I don't buy an autograph before I am confident that it is legitimate, whether from my own eye or the eye of several others. I'm not as familiar with baseball signatures as I am with the other areas of the hobby, but I've found many good deals in the past by discerning genuine signatures from forgeries.
Steiner has some stuff on sale now For 49 and 99 dollars.
