JFK autopen-signed photo sells for $1400

So all you have to do is concoct a three-lines-of-text story and you can sell an autopen JFK for $1400! The seller stated that he got the photo from the estate of a man who "got it signed when (JFK) came to town (in 1960)." Now maybe that's really what the seller was told, but, of course, all the seller had to do was do a little research to find that is a very common JFK autopen signature. Not only that, but this signature was nowhere near the way JFK was signing on the campaign trail.

I also posted this just for the unlikely chance that a member here purchased it, so that he/she could try to get a refund. I highly doubt that anyone on AML purchased it, but you never know.

Also, sadly, the auction ended about 12 days ago, and the buyer has already received the item and left positive feedback.

Great post. The most issue that I worried when buying autograph is autopen. I am a novice and always diffiuclt for me to spot autopen. So can you give me some guidelines on how to spot the autopen?

Sorry, I didn't reply sooner, Kit. It's good to hear from you. I hope you're doing well. Well, I'm no expert on autopens, but I know there are some clues to look for. From what I understand, sometimes the writing may appear somewhat shaky. Also, look for dots at the top or bottom of lines in the signature where the machine may stop and then start again.

Also, depending on the celebrity, you may just google the persons name followed by "autopen". Sometimes that will pull up common autopen signatures of the celebrity. Many times a celebrity, especially a politician, will have several different autopen signatures.

the 'lines' that make up the sig are very rigid and non flexible and lack warmth as well

Some buyers never do any research and help keep sellers like this in business. I imagine the seller could not believe their luck

I bet you're right, Dan, because that seller has had that particular photo for sale for several months. It's really too bad for that buyer who dropped a lot of money and thinks he or she has an authentic JFK signed photo. Actually, if that were real, it would probably be worth $3000-$4000.

No doubt. For instance, if this $1400 autopen buyer had known he wasn't getting the real thing, he'd maybe still be in the market for a real JFK photo, and thus be willing to save up until he got $3000 or so. But now he's out of the market, so demand has taken one small step backward.

Ex actly, The really rare and tough ones would appreciate quite a bit. Mantle would not go up too much (but of course would) because he signed a lot at shows.
