Authenticity is Everything
STAR TREK AUTOGRAPHS
The 1950s and 60s were decades when Americans were fascinated with all things involving space travel. With the advent of sending men into orbit this increased the interest. In 1966 Gene Roddenberry created the television Sci-Fi adventure Star Trek. It was not an overnight success by any means. Syndication actually put it on the map since it attracted younger non-prime time viewers. Early Star Trek "conventions" were underway almost from the beginning with dedicated fans (mostly younger) showing their support. After the series was cancelled a cartoon series Star Trek: The Animated Series was created with all the major cast except for Walter Koenig providing voices. The lack of Koenig was apparently apparently a cost saving measure. Star Trek became my favorite Sci-Fi show surpassing my previous favorite of Lost in Space. The series expanded to several movies with many of the original stars in the same roles.
Many Star Trek collectors concentrate on the seven or eight major actors/actresses that had recurring roles on the show. For my own collection I tend to expand that (as I tend to do with all my collections) to include some somewhat minor characters and also favorite guest stars. The ones included below are my idea of a good collection.
Unlike most on AML I tend to dislike multi-signed pieces this is due in part to the fact that I do not frame ans display. I prefer the notebook method. That is simply a matter of personal preference many friends have great framed "walls" of autographs. My list for "major" autographs are the first seven the remainder I like to have since they had identifiable roles on the show. The number after the name is the number of episodes according to imdb.

As for guests I merely add ones that were personal favorites of mine. Spock's parents played by Mark Lenard and Jane Wyatt are examples. John Fiedler, Elisha Cook, Jr.,William Schallert, Lee Bergere, William Campbell, Bruce Hyde, Stanley Adams, Roger Carmel, Ian Wolfe, Ken Lynch, Byron Morrow, James Gregory and many others are on my list.
As a collector I am more interested in the signature than the photograph it is on. While I like to have them on Star Trek items is not a necessity for me.

I think you can get real ones (uncerted) on ebay for $80 - $100. Don't know about certed prices.

Yes that's what this ones going for. But it's just so hard to tell the real from the fakes, as both The Shat and Nimoy have changed their sigs over the years. Even if it were real, this seems to be an especially sloppy Nimoy. If you check out the ones done in the early 90s for the Home Shopping Channel, they would put out hundreds of multi signed items, and each was as neat as the rest. The Shats is a little better here, if it is indeed real.

This style is very problematic. You'll see these with TPA certification, and also in the stock of some dubious ebay sellers. Problem is, I have attended conventions for the last 20 years, meeting both Shat and Nimoy many times, and I never, repeat never, witnessed them sign in this fashion. Nimoy's authentic signature is very compact. See the signature study posted here on AML soon after Nimoy's death. To my recollection it was spot on, and did not feature any examples like the one in question here.

I've attached some in-person examples above. The forgers make little attempt to match the letter formation in "Leonard."

That is very interesting I had always thought they were probably real just an "assembly line" signing. I never really cared for them so never bought one. I think I have seen PSA ones of these but not sure.

I believe we are talking about the Shatner + Nimoy dual signed offered by Star Shots on eBay and often seen at Autograph World and a few other reputable dealers.
I have a few of these in my collection obtained from Star Shots (Arnie is his name, I believe).
While sloppy, I believed they were okay. There is a great deal of variation in the signatures - some pretty typical and some a real mess. They are certainly not cookie cutter fakes.
At the time I purchased these, I ran them by our own Pete Chuka. Pete was familiar with the seller and felt the signed pics were likely fine... the result of a large batch signing as the seller claims.
(The funny thing is... the focus on the last few posts here has been on the Nimoys, which looked fairly typical to me. In my view, the Shatners were more rushed looking and sloppy.)
I am still leaning they are okay, but I've been around this hobby long enough to know you need to keep an open mind to new evidence and opinions. :-)

In most cases it worries me when you can tell who the source of an autograph is by the way it's signed.

You are correct in most cases. But there are certainly instances where distinctive pens and signature styles are used and it creates a "look" for a batch of authentic items.
I can pick out an OPX Harrison Ford or a Steiner Jeter with a high percentage of accuracy - doesn't mean they are fakes.

That's true, and why I said in most cases. What comes to mind are things like Michael Jacksons, where you can identify some suppliers with a high degree of accuracy.
