BEWITCHED was a long running television series about a man who falls in love and marries a witch.   There had been a Frederic March and Veronica Lake movie called I Married a Witch (1942) although the success of the Jimmy Stewart movie Bell, Book and Candle (1958) played a role in the TV series.

Bewitched starred Elizabeth Montgomery as Samantha and Dick York as her husband Darren Stephens.  York was later replaced by Dick Sargent.   Star of stage and film, Agnes Moorehead, played Samantha's mother Endora.   David White played Larry Tate Darren's hot-headed boss.  William Asher was the producer and director of much of the series he was the husband of Elizabeth Montgomery.   It was Asher who also cast most of the players.   If people were easy to work with, he would often use them over and over.

Elizabeth Montgomery after the series ended starred in many dramatic roles far different than her Samantha Stephens role.   She played Lizzie Borden in a mini-series.   Her autograph is uncommon, and often forged.  This is an example of her autograph at the time Bewitched was first on the air.   It is part of the famed John Verzi collection that Tom Kramer purchased.

I will list the autographs as I put them on in order below :

AHA!!! That IS her in The Invaders! I just looked. I was never sure. So many folks in that Zone series.

Thank you, Eric, not sure how I forgot to add her Twilight Zone appearance many of the actors on Bewitched did that series including Dick York and David White.  Dick York did two episodes of The Twilight Zone.

Thank you so much Eric.  Yes, her autograph is very scarce in authentic form.  I know I love that color I call it turquoise for lack of a better word for it.  Agnes Moorehead was a wonderful actress and adept at playing odd roles at times.   I liked her in Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte too.

I'd call that color teal.

Thank you JK.  I had not even thought of that but it is like a teal blue.  My favorite color for autographs of the 1950s-early 70s.

yes she is a very good actress

Ah I didnt know that, how sad.  He was a very udnervalued  actor I felt.  A big shout out  also needs to go to the screenwriters as the script was also outstanding. I  always think that Sabrina the teenage witch was half modelled on Bewitched

Yes, I think you are right I am sure the show Sabrina the Teenage Witch was heavily influenced by Bewitched.   David White was a wonderful actor and I never saw him deliver a bad performance.

MARION LORNE (1883-1968) was the oldest semi-regular cast member of Bewitched.  From all accounts she was also the most beloved one.  Everyone that was interviewed always say nice things about her.  Primarily a stage actress she came fairly late to movies and television.  She was wonderful as the odd mother of Robert Waker in the Alfred Hitchcock classic Strangers on a Train (1951).  Her last movie was the Dustin Hoffman movie The Graduate (1967).  Perhaps foreshadowing her Bewitched name she played "Aunt Clara" in the Rosiland Russell film The Girl Rush (1955).    Her first major television role was as Mrs. Gurney in the 1950s Wally Cox comedy Mr. Peepers.  Lorne was already over 80 when she was cast as "Aunt Clara" a sweet witch whose powers were diminishing and unpredictable.   A hit with fans and cast alike she appeared on 27 episodes of the show.  Her last episode was in 1968 she died less than a month later.   Her autograph is uncommon.   This example of mine is from the John Verzi collection.

I have actually gone to see how much the box set costs, it was a great series

Thank you michelle it was a fun show that still holds up today.  I think children today would love it as much as I did.   I have the box set of it.  I wish that Vudu or YouTube would put on for streaming.   I love the theme music to the show it is very upbeat.

MABEL ALBERTSON (1901-1982) was perfect as Phyllis Stephens the mother of Darren in Bewitched.  In real life she was the older sister of actor Jack Albertson and former mother-in-law of Cloris Leachman.  She was almost typecast as a mother since she played the role as Dick Van Dyke's mother on The New Dick Van Dyke Show and was Howard Sprague's mother on The Andy Griffith Show.  In movies and television, she was often cast in that role or a society matron.  She was in television shows such as The Munsters, The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, The Mary Tyler Mdore Show, Gunsmoke, Bonanza and many more.  She was in films such as Don't Give Up the Ship (1959) with Jerry Lewis, and All the Fine Young Cannibals (1960), On a Clear Day You Can See Forever (1970) and The House that Wouldn't Die (1970) .  Her autograph is elusive, and I searched for a long time for her autograph finding an ALS and card part of the Peter Hanson collection several years ago.  This example is another of the John Verzi Collection.
