STUDY: Jerry Lee Lewis - TTM real or not real

Steve asked me to start a new thread since some were having a lot of issues with regards to whether or not the through the mail autographs of Jerry Lee Lewis are real or not.  I will post some examples of what we have been getting recently and some know in person examples.   These TTM signatures are not cheap.  You have to pay $50 for them to his box office box.  The question is are they real or not.  Roger has said that he has never seen Mr. Lewis sign this way and it looks to perfect - like a woman's signature.

Yes thanks for all your work Roger and for everyone elses also.  This has certainly been the most fascinating & interesting thread I have ever read on this article.  I feel sorry for those that sent in items (I hope not precious ones) and got secs backs for their 50.00.  That is unbelievable to me.  Also, the in-store appearance with the sec signed CD booklets.  That may be even worse perhaps because I am sure some people took off work & traveled just to go to it.  What was JLL's team thinking when they resorted to this?  So now it comes down to sending in 100.00 and you are most likely going to get a real sig?  Well thats just great.  But once again great work by all and this is why I joined this site.  Its been a learning experience to the max!  Glad I could help in some way.

Everyone: Do you want me to ask JLL if he'd be kind enough to video himself singing some examples, or should we leave it at this? If you're not seeing possible secretarials TTM anymore, I'm inclined to let it go. Up to you, though.

Perhaps a better question would be about the ones Roger deemed fake.  Can those folks get a refund or just send another 50.00 (intead of the full 100) and have another item signed?  Only seems fair that they should not have to send in 100.00 now.

I actually think hold off on asking for the video.  Looks like they have changed their ways and are sending out real ones.  Which is GREAT. Explains the price increase from $50 to $100.

At $100 its still worth it in my book! And  I think they have learned to have him really sign these…..

Yes Mark, but in some cases it would be 150.00 now for those that are already out 50.00 on their secretarials.  I dont think thats fair.

I do not profess to be a JLL expert, but I have followed this thread closely and with great interest.

Some could argue some of the through-the-mail signatures are variants or slow due to age, signing environment, etc. Yet, if one were to believe that, one has to be willing to accept an extremely wide range of natural variation. And much of that variation is within a relatively short time span -- it’s not like we are looking at variation that has occurred over a 50 year period.

One observation I’d like to make is this. There appears to be a pattern of three characteristics that appear together in some of the through-the-mail signatures displayed here:

  • J is notably shorter than the following L in Lee and L in Lewis. In verified exemplars, the three capital letters are about the same height.
  • Upright Ls with small loops (little right slant)
  • Big squiggle under name

Why do these three “variant” characteristic tend to appear together in some through-the-mail responses? Does it make sense that if it was a natural variant for JLL, every time he does a small J, he also makes the Ls upright with small loops and adds a big squiggle underneath? Or is it more plausible this reason for this is someone else has signed?

Also, when challenged regarding the signatures, suddenly the through-the-mail responses look a lot more like the verified exemplars of old!

While I don’t think this has been proven beyond a doubt, I think the circumstantial evidence is strong and some of the previous TTM examples should be viewed with great skepticism.

And Mark I'm not a betting man (anymore lol) but I would lay my money down that your signature comes back like a known authentic example.  Let us know.

Well.. sort of an update.  I mailed 2 more items to see if I can get an authentic signature, since the ones that are coming back are authentic of late. A put a note in there with our findings and that the one I got was not authentic.  I will keep everyone posted.  I did not include any money, just a return label.

Lets see what happens.  This time I sent some rare SUN items…. fingers crossed.
