Would someone be interested in writing a report on Jerry Lee Lewis autographs that summarizes the two discussions on him here? Show examples of each autograph of note and let the members currently in each discussion vote on each style, and let buyers and sellers make up their own minds.
Each member could vote on which ones they strongly believe are genuine/likely genuine/aren't sure/strongly believe are not genuine. Secretarials would be addressed, too.
One person can do it or two.
Thoughts? Volunteers?
I posted them on the pick guards earlier in the post
oh dear seems ive opened a can of worms here being the instergator of this thread my take on it is if in doubt leave alone the people who bought the books will say the sig is genuine because they bought from a well known book shop and everybody knows that so it must be genuine? now heres a thing a well known bookseller in the uk is selling signed copies of a well known footballer and the sig in that is a sig we have never seen before from this guy strange ? in fact it looks like a baby signed them will it put people off no because the majority of people would not know what is sig looks like they buy it because a well known company is selling them? thank god for this site and the opinions of people
I would not consider those pieces known Whitten signatures. You were told by someone JW took items inside and brought them back signed. You didn't see them signed, your friend didn't see them signed and yet these are KNOWN authentic exemplars of JW Whitten. I'm not saying JLL signed the items or that JW didn't. I am just saying this is not a very strong way of considering your exemplars as concrete proof. Maybe JW took them in the back and some third party signed them?
I'd agree with that. The way he wrote "Thanks" is spot on with the signature (and who knows where that came from) and the pick guards.
Those pick guards were brought in by Whitten. Nobody saw him sign them. Correct? One was authenticated by PSA/DNA. Wouldn't you need to somehow verify that they were actually signed by Whitten? After all, they are the basis of your claim that the book signatures were signed by him.
Correct, I agreed with Chad that they cannot be considered known exemplars.
Something to think about:
Most careful and reputable dealers don't consider an autograph genuine without substantial, strong proof that it is. They don't consider it real until proven otherwise.
Back in the 1950s, fans could get a Jerry Lee Lewis-signed copy of his "Breathless" single for some gum wrappers and 50-cents S&H. Those signatures were reproductions, but represented as genuine. So whether the ones today are real or not, JLL has a history of representing inauthentic autographs as genuine.
I haven't reviewed the TTM discussion in some time, but wasn't it pretty much proven that some TTM signatures were "secretarials" as well, even for those who paid?! There's 2 instances of representing inauthentic autographs as genuine, so I don't know why anyone would be surprised that the books are highly questionable.
Ryan - I dont think anything was proven one way or another. There were varying opinions to be sure. I think people should start posting only their in person signatures (ones you witnessed signing) now, and start drawing your conclusions on those ones we know are real against the others we did not witness. Lets look for similar traits in both. I posted mine on the TTM mail thread and I think there were others posted as well.
