Slabbed up and authenticated by PSA/DNA. The listing details saying a late 1960's autograph.

However, what is missing in this listing is when and where it was signed. This is on a 1967 "Talk Of The Town" programme.

Someone made the decision to "cut" the signature and the history of the piece with it. Which leads me to the question.

When in your opinion is it ok to alter an original piece?

For myself collecting has to do with the history of the item, only in the most dire circumstances (if the programme was unsolvable) would it be beneficial to cut the piece out.

I am sure others might feel the signature is the value and what it is signed on is merely a surface. However now a piece like this one is summed up to a period and loses a part of its history with it, sort of bothers me a little.

Good topic. Hmm. I recognize that cover because I handled one signed by Gleason in 1967. On the wine list. Nice Liza adverts etc. Now, one could say displaying the wine list would be difficult to display, so cut it out (the page, not the signature!). In this case, the signature is or was on the cover so context/date/"texture" is lost. I agree re last resort notion. Also, w/o the context the color and other partial imagery on the "cut" becomes much more distracting IMO. To me more is ...more.

Buying an autograph is part of the parcel to know roughly where it was signed, as a collector that is. On the other hand people (dealers) want to make as much money as they possibly can and they don't seem to care if they cut something into pieces. It's all about the slabbed coa.

The item itself can help date and place when it was signed.

This item in particular for instance, that is why it bothers me someone would chop it for just slabbing purposes.

It is possible that it needed cut. But I tend to think it was for the cert.

Here is another signed Talk Of The Town from 67.

It depends on the significance of the document or item the signature is on. Anyone who collects or deals with autographs should keep the importance factor in mind. There is a time and place for everything. Just to cut up a piece to be slabbed for resell is not a good idea in general.

With the Beatles it's all about subject matter historical importance that really can increase the value of the signatures.

I think it's outrageous someone would trim this so closely to the signature just to get it in a dumb plastic slab. The historical context is lost, and it's trimmed so close, the signature can't be used for anything else other than sitting in the slab.

If a seller wants to authenticate it, fine... You can get a COA without having to slice it apart and cramming it in a plastic tomb. If anything, this move reduces the number of potentially interested parties. Thoughtless.
+1 exactly my point! It seems like this is starting to increase, especially with vintage items. I feel like (as owners) it is our duty to preserve them as best as we can. This is just a plastic tomb with no context.

One could argue contrast as well as the obvious context has been severely hampered. It has literally has been reduced and not just in size.

I've never noticed Mccartney's signature being cut up like this, only Hendrix that there seems to be an abundance of.
The Hendrix items were ones I thought of too.

This is another way PSA is screwing up the hobby as much as helping it. Stupid collectors want their magic wand so badly that they'll deface items for it.

Yep, Sad. I guess, like I said, the history of the item is important. I am not sure if some collectors are more about just having the signature and not worrying about where or when it came from, I just don't buy into these cuts alone.

Sure it will display well with a picture, but having the whole piece together is more important to me imo.
