This signed picture sleeve will be offered in the next Gotta Have Rock and Roll auction.

I don’t see an issue with the signatures. However, the problem is the provenance. It’s a German picture sleeve, and in the letter of provenance the original recipient provides a very specific and detailed account of getting it signed on 9/14/68 in Germany.

The confusing part is that the photo on the front of the sleeve was taken on 9/18/68 in Copenhagen. So, obviously the picture sleeve didn’t exist on the date he claims it was signed.

It was released after the Doors returned to the US. As far as I know, they didn’t return to Europe as a group until they played the Isle of Wight Festival in August of 1970.

Hope you are well Mark.

Authentic imo.

I would not be surprised to see this land between 20 and 25K.

A splendid piece.

Amazing what treasures are still turning up every so often when it

comes to JDM/The Doors signed items.

This piece has a wonderful setting. Very desirable.

You too my friend. Do you have a theory regarding the provenance?

Hello Mark. Apologies for the delay.

I don’t have a theory regarding the background as provided for this offering. Suffice to say that it was originally intended to provide provenance to the item but actually does more harm than good in this instance. I recently sold a complete signed Promo picture (The Doors). I went out of my way to provide provenance, including letters from Bill Siddons at the time that served to back up the origin of the item I consigned. Scandinavian.

The importance of provenance I gleaned from yourself and JackGotLucky some years back.

This current topic item is indeed the real deal but the provenance note does it harm and is self defeating .

Amazing item nonetheless

plus one.  I also think the loa does more harm than good.  Worryingly there is no date on it either.  It raises too many unanswered questionns .  If I had that kind of money which I dont and was thinking of bidding on it, I would hesitate as the bidding increased, but it still is an amazing item

I never have. I had somebody send me the debut album, signed by everyone but Robby. I was going to see Robby in concert and was going to get it signed for them but it didn't happen (it was first names only). But Jim signed on the dark part and you couldn't even see it without 10 flashlights pointed right at it.

I'd much rather have an item like this, where EVERY signature can be seen, but obviously, an LP is much more valuable.

I agree. It’s amazing that there’s another signed debut album, but I’d still rather have a full signature with good contrast on a picture sleeve.

Agreed. The signatures are indeed genuine. Unfortunately, the LOP needs to be tossed in this situation. It's just so puzzling that one could get the story/dates so wrong/inaccurate?... The item/authentic sigs. speak for themselves and think it will fetch a nice price. ...I mean, it's only the second signed 45 related item that i've seen/signed by all 4. (Here's an image of the other one)...

It’s very puzzling in that it isn’t just the wrong occasion. It’s the wrong country. There’s nothing in particular in the story that gives the impression that it was fabricated, and it includes a good amount of detail. But of course it can’t possibly be true.

Another possibility as he must be quite elderley now is that he has got muddled in his recollections or someone has written the account on his behalf and he has signed it , after all the sigs are real

That’s certainly a possibility. As I mentioned earlier, it was suggested to me that he might have gotten something else signed at the Frankfurt show and mixed that up with the picture sleeve. It would mean that he had a German picture sleeve that he or someone else got signed in the US, and he either forgot that and confused it with the other item or chose to use the provenance associated with the other item.

Throwing away the LOP would be fraud: destroying evidence.

How could that letter of provenance be an honest recollection mistake?
